White screen of death

I have been running OS Catalina for the last 8 months upgraded with a patch. No troubles. 1 TB SSD installed two years ago. No trouble. Few days ago the screen froze and my wife tries a reboot. Since then we can't get past the white screen. Tried SMC and PRAM reset. Cant get any logo or indeed options to boot from a recently cloned external hard drive. Safe boot doesn't work. Keyboard is working because PRAM reset happens but with no progress. There was no flickering or any evidence of GPU issues previously. It maybe the end of the road for an ageing iMac but it's annoying that I can't find out what's wrong with it. Any help would be appreciated. Please don't flame me for the patch upgrade although I am aware this maybe responsible :-(

Lets give this a try!

Restart your system and press the T key to enter into Target Disk Mode. The screen should have the FireWire icon image floating on it.

Unlike the other Modes this one uses the firmware driver for the built-in Intel graphics engine in the CPU. Lets know if you can get this far,

Thanks Dan.

I was getting impatient so read up someone's assessment that their hard drive was monopolising the boot options after a dosdude patch upgrade. Interestingly, once I disconnected the internal ssd, I was then able to get the option to boot from my back up external drive. Pretty poor for a Crucial ssd. I have ordered a new one. Will keep pushing the old horse for a little bit longer :-) Many thanks for taking the time out to help. Hope my experience helps someone out there. Once I get into the OS I will try to ensure boot options are set up correctly. Although not having access to Recovery Console is a bit of a bummer. But, this is what you get when you do a third party fiddle. At least I can install uptodate apps on Catalina
