Pink vertical lines, particularly during dark screens

Hi,

I opened my laptop at school one day and at certain angles I got intermittent pink vertical bars on my screen. Now it happens almost every time I open my laptop, but sometimes it'll be normal until I move it. An external monitor works perfectly fine.

Also, I noticed that the bars are much more pronounced when my screen is dark, like when using zoom or "dark mode" apps. I took photos of a white screen and a black screen below for comparison.

I'm hoping to repair this issue myself as it's not worth fixing or getting a new laptop (the device requirements for my program push it to 1k). Does anyone know what part of the display is ruined? I assume it's a cable since it looks normal at some angles.

Hook your machine up to an external monitor and see if you are getting the same results to help narrow down the issue.

Looks like you have a defective display that will need to be replaced.

Yeah it's the cable.

It doesn't really matter exactly which part is broken as you'll need to replace the whole display assembly anyway.

@danj I doubt if he will proceed with this kind of repair. Many people stayed away from Mac for a while after becoming victims of this issue.

@tomchai - Yes & No! While some people did sour from Apples direction of a less serviceable and more costly repair. Apple is not alone here! Many people who need the applications that run on macOS will either get their system repaired or look at getting a replacement system.

Remember its about five years when this person bought this system, so while it's painful, it's not unexpected for a new design which is so radical. Apple basically reduced the lifespan of their systems! Instead of getting a good 10 years (like I'm getting in my 2012 15" MacBook Pro) Todays systems are at best getting five years before needing attention and is less repairable! Which is about what the rest of the industry is now. Forcing replacement over repair!

The root issue is poor design at the start! Their so focused on the manufacturing process they forget how to design the system to be serviceable! And surprisingly it doesn't need to cost more! Or even take more effort to build!

@danj For professionals invested in their ecosystem, this love and hate relationship may go on, heck, they may even love it more after this.

Still, there is much to do to turn the whole thing around. You're doing it and keep it on!

@tomchai - The best we can do is offer the needed info so the person is able to make an intelligent decision based on their needs and what they can afford.
