Tablet battery won't charge via Keyboard

Hi, I have a surface book 2 15", it's 2.5 years old, it's heavily used, the keyboard battery won't charge, stays at 0%. (the Tablet battery is fine)

I understand the keyboard Battery may have died of age, if that's the case, I'll replace it.

but my problem is that the Tablet battery won't charge if I plug the charger in the keyboard port, though the indicator light comes on, the percentage won't increase.

it'll charge only if I eject the Tablet and plug it in directly,

My question is, Is it because of the faulty keyboard Battery or charger or something wrong with the keyboard base?

will replacing the keyboard battery fix it?

Es esta una buena pregunta?

I will try replacing the battery, here is a video mentioning the problem and fix .

did it solve the issue? I currently have the same problem. Have disassembled the base unit and successfully charged the previously fully discharged battery with an external battery charger. Windows still claims the battery is at 0% and charges neither Battery 1 (in the tablet) nor Battery two.

Suspiciously though, the attach/detach loop is gone now.

After having gone through the exercise of removing and re-installing the battery drivers, Windows now claims that there is no battery present.

The SB is seriously buggy in the battery charging department.

Thanks for that - I was going to try the same thing, but now know that it's not worth the effort. So, also disconnecting the keyboard battery is useless, and I'm now thinking even replacing the battery isn't going to work. Not even going to risk buying a 60$ battery anymore.

I guess the power circuit in the keyboard portion is having issues, this may prevent the keyboard half from properly turning on and supply power to upper part.

However you have the device and we don’t, you can’t get far by just asking, you need to swap the parts yourself to try.

I have the same device, age, etc - and the exact same issue. No issues running on Windows 10 for years. I upgraded to Windows 11 in January - and no problems until an update last week. the keyboard base battery doesn’t charge or pass charge to the tablet. But if I manually disconnect the tablet from the base, the battery holds charge.

Has anyone found a solution to this? I have the exact same issue. The tablet won't charge unless plugged in directly.

Dumb Question it wasn't stated if the base worked at all like keyboard/touch pad? Does the OS recognize the 2nd battery? If those are working and it's just the charging that isn't working, unfortunately you will need to either take it apart and inspect or try finding someone w/ a screen so you can try it out, I highly doubt it's software. I myself took a gamble on the dock connector when my base kept disconnecting from the tablet even though it was connected, and it was a good gamble.

Same issue here - I've even opened the keyboard and pysically disconnected the 2nd battery - it still detects it (at 0%) as hardware. Disabling this battery also doesn't resolve the issue. There seems to be no way to get the tablet to charge via the keyboard. Note that the tablet DOES charge directly (but the charging cable doesn't magnetically stick of course), and it DOES recognise that it's connected to power via the keyboard - it just doesn't charge (and actually discharges).

" (but the charging cable doesn't magnetically stick of course)"

That's not normal. The connector should attach magnetically on the tablet as well.

As for the FangerZero's original question: In my case it's just the charging that doesn't work. Keyboard and trackpad do their job (I haven't checked if the graphics processor works.)

You're right - it does attach magnetically, but not as 'snappily' and stable as to the keyboard.

My son was able to play a 3d game yesterday for about 90 minutes, base attached and power applied, and the tablet battery (only) depleted from 100% to 78% during that time. After that, he reattached the tablet only to the docking station again for what is now his normal 'desktop' setup, in order to recharge the tablet battery.

@HotelPapa100 If everything works but the charging, then obviously it's either power delivery on the board or the charger, you could try a multi-meter or something. They're like $20-30 at the store. There's a setting that tests continuity.

I know more in the meantime. It's the battery's microcontroller sabotaging the battery. I have charged the cells directly with a charger dedicated to LiIon cells. They are all at 4.2V now. The computer still states "Battery 0%, not charging"

THIS is why we need Right To Repair

if that's happening then get a new charger if that doesn't work try to take it back to the place you got it they can check it out if you cant try using a charger that fits but not that exact charger.

It's not the charger, I've tried both the normal charger, plus at least 2 Surface Docks, plus a bunch of powerful USB-c chargers. It's something in the keyboard..
