MacBook makes startup noise, but doesn't power on, battery charged

Hi, i'm having an issue with my macbook pro 17. I have fully charged the battery, yet there is no light in the back. The adapter displays a green light, tried with a few different ones, all indicate that my battery is charged..yet I can't see the light in the back at all..When I try to start it, it sounds like the harddrive is working but after a few seconds just stays making the same attempting noise to start up..Basically sounding like it's in the process, but it wont start...screen stays black the whole time..I don't know what could be wrong with it :( Please help

Do you hear the apple chime at startup or are you only hearing the hard drive spin up?

Have you thought of hooking an external display up to the mbp?

- de

is it okay to hear a start up chime and drive noise ??

- de

I have similar issue - but I have a solid state drive so its not the disk spinning. I hear a feint mechanical sounds almost like a groan sound repeatedly as it tries to start up. I do not hear the chime at all. Screen stays black. Then I push the power button once a cycle and after several tries it "catches", the screen lights up and it gets to the login screen after saying it restarted after a 'problem'.

- de

What do you mean you push the power button once a cycle and after several tries it catches? I am currently having the exact same issue as you (upgraded to a solid state drive and more RAM a year ago), and when I power on I hear a fan or mechanical sound but screen stays black. I never hear the chime. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I know Apple doesn't have the customer service it use to but I still love my MacBook.

A couple of things that are easy to try on a mac are to reset the SMC and PRAM. Most likely neither will fix the problem but sometimes they will.

You can reset the SMC by removing the battery and power from the laptop, then with no power hold the power button for about 30 seconds and release it. After doing that replace the battery try to turn it on.

Resetting PRAM is done by holding the P, R, command and option keys as the computer is turned on. Hold them until after the chime, if it gets that far.

Like I said most of the time these two solutions do not fix the problem but are quick and easy to try.

Wow!! Me too!! Thank u thank u thank u for contributing and helping out! I was in panic mode but ahhhhhhhh.... I can breathe a sigh of relief now thanks to your helpful tip, Erik! You ROCK!!! What does PRAM even mean tho and why did it have to be reset? Am I doing something wrong with daily usage that this had to happen?

Ouroboros is right that a little more information would help.

If it sounds like the hard drive is spinning up, then stoping, it's possible your HD is failing.

If you hear a startup chime and the screen stays black, connecting the computer to an external monitor will tell you whether or not the display is faulty.

My Macbook pro A1261 does not power up. It turns on the white power button, the hard drive spins not full on as it used to and the screen does not turn on nor the back apple is lit.

I checked and replace the PRAM battery and did not work. Would I need another hard drive or a logic board? also, how can I recover what I have in my hard drive?

If I connect my hard drive to another A1261 would it work?

PLEASE HELP!

Yes if you pulled your hard drive out and put into a enclosure and hooked it to another machine it should work so you can pull your data off.

Thanks Justin. I'll put my hard drive to another A1261 to keep working with my stuff. Thanks again.

I had the same problem as these two regarding the hard drive turning but the monitor refuses to boot on. I reset the PRAM(I got it to turn on once and reset the PRAM) and restarted the mac. This time when i turned it on the apple chime sound was present(for the first time) but the monitor still remained black. Any suggestions?

I'm having a similar problem. Attempted to reset PRAM and SMC from unplugging the battery, etc. 2012 MacBook Pro 15, 1gb video. It does the startup chime, but the screen stays black, the caps lock light functions, but no volume increase/decrease sound. Closing the lid the sleep indicator comes on. After a battery unplug it attempts to start and dies with a black screen, then trying to re start again it does the same half start... Any solutions to this?

I had the same problem but the answers mentioned here didn't worked for me.... And I am stating here what has worked for me.

Note: 1) Boot chime sound was there every time I tried to start it.

2) Just 3-4 seconds after...the boot process was getting frozen.

3) I tried removing SDD and then boot from USB (ubuntu) , but it didn't worked.

4) Every time i started into device select on boot (Holding OPTION at the chime sound)... the spinner was getting stopped and the screen was getting frozen.

5) My model was MacAir 2013.

6) I tried every other answer mentioned here on this page

Out of frustration when nothing was working out, I took out its motherboard ( a.k.a logic board ) and to my surprise I saw green colored corrosion... around one particular IC and resistor... everything else was working fine... but this green colored rust catches my attention. So with some plastic material i tried to shred off the rusted dust and used ALCOHOL (its chemical property it to evaporate taking water moisture with it) to clean it up...and then I left it in direct sunlight for some 1-2 hr to get it dried off thoroughly.

Screwed it into laptop again and Voila...its working perfectly fine!!!!

I found that removing the batt and holding the power for 1 minute without power cable connecte, then reconnecting battery and starting worked for me. My issue was at first, nothing, no sound, no boot. Then after removing battery and holding power without cable connected for 5 sec I got a chime, but then nothing. Then after resetting PRAM got same thing, sound but no boot (slight screen flicker) - then the very long power hold with batt disconnected pushed it through to booting fine. Good luck!

I've had black screen several times, each time I try an OS uograde. Need to remember to disvonnect all peripherals next time to see if it helps. All nvram anf reset doesn't work and there is no startup chime. It seems rather random what "fixes" it but the last thing i had been doing before it suddenly seemed to start properly again is I held the option-cmd-esc for an extended period. Hope that helps someone.
