Water damage. Everything works except the battery.

If I unplug the laptop, it turns off. It has been reduced to a desktop computer.

I have also noticed that a couple of the battery cells are swollen.

Update (09/09/2021)

Here are the pics. I hope.

Hi @sambodamon ,

Has the water damage been taken care of i.e. cleaned away any signs of corrosion etc, you didn't say?

- de

@sambodamon - I see pictures!

It looks like your system needs a good dusting. The fan blades look completely caked! Get a small soft paint brush and a can of Can'ed air. Carefully scrub the logic board and fans to loosen the dust and other debris.

The component you have focused in on it a inductor This will need micro soldering tools & skills as well as getting the needed part.

Well, you’ve got a bad battery! As the onboard micro controller chip within it or the connection to your system is not working so the sensor data is not getting to SMC.

I would contact the store which sold you the battery (if its new) to get yours exchanged if you can, otherwise you’ll need another new one ;-{

Clearly your systems bath caused more issues here if you are still using the original battery. Time to take pictures of the logic board looking at both sides as you could still have corrosion damage on the charging logic. Post the images so we can see how things look. It is clear that the battery is shot. At some point I suspect it will leak. I do not have the skills to affect repairs, nor do I wish to spend $1,000+ for Apple to repair it. If I paid Apple to replace the battery, I’d be out a couple of hundred bucks (not too bad), if they are willing.

Question: if I simply remove all the battery cells, would the laptop power up? If not, is there a work around (e.g. solder a wire or wires onto those that are connecting to the power circuit) since the batteries are dead anyway?

By the way, I am writing this from the very laptop in question.

Thank you in advance for your expertise and time!

OK, no there is no way to run the system without a battery. You know its not that difficult to replace the battery if you take your time and don't force things. Did you review this guide? Reemplazo de la batería en la MacBook Pro 15" con Pantalla de Retina de mediados de 2014

While you may not have the skills I'm sure you have a friend or an independent shop which does. In any case it won't cost $1000+ to get it done. But your inductor issue is still something that will needed to be fixed as well.

Yes. I read that to get to that point of disassembly. I believe I can replace the battery. Thank you again.

@sambodamon

If it is bad enough it can be seen with the naked eye, although a magnifying lamp will make it easier to see.

Even a mobile phone camera may be good enough if the image can be zoomed in.

Here's an image of what moderate to severe water damage can look like.

It doesn't have to be widespread on the board it can be just little pockets of damage here and there even tiny flecks. So carefully and slowly check the whole board especially around the area where you think that the water may have first penetrated

Boards can get dusty over time so don't confuse what may be just dust (which is not good in humid situations) instead of corrosion. Surface dust may come of with a gentle brushing using a soft brush and a vacuum cleaner whereas corrosion won't. It needs to be gently removed with a Q-Tip lightly moistened with isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available from electronics parts stores).

It may turn out that there is none to be seen but you did say water damage so it pays to check. Even though there may not be any more problems now it can occur weeks or months later as the corrosion, if not cleaned away, will continue to erode the metal parts of components which are very thin to start with.

Be ESD aware and use a wrist strap connected to an earth point and also disconnect the battery from the systemboard. This will ensure that you can't damage the board electrically when inspecting it, either by accidentally touching it with your fingers - ESD, or using metal tools and accidentally shorting out components.

Golden rule with electronics I was taught more than 50 years ago when working on electronics "Power off first, on last except if needed for testing"

Power off in laptops means disconnecting the battery as there is always power on the motherboard, even when the laptop is off. The power button is not a power isolating button.

Thank you. I have previously replaced a logic board on another MacBook Pro before, so I have a toolkit from iFixit. I am color-blind, so I'll have to wait until my wife gets home (she's not color-blind). I have a new used iPhone SE (2016). I will take pictures of anything that looks "suspicious".

My son reminded me that over a year ago he took it to the Genius Bar (after the spill, which was just water BTW). He thinks there was an indicator that showed it had gotten wet. The cost to repair was estimated at around $1,000. That determination was made on the sales floor, not at the repair shop.

@sambodamon

Colour blindness should not be a problem as you should be able to see if the component connections seem clean and clear or if they have a furry coating. The colour can vary depending on what metals have been corroded.

Tap water, bottled water, spring water etc all contain impurities which conduct electricity and causes corrosion which can damage the components. The only liquid that won't do this is distilled water. Even Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ will conduct electricity but when it has evaporated (very short evap time) it leaves no conductive residues so that's why it is safe to use it. When I say conduct electricity, the water can create circuit paths that weren't in the operating design when the power is on, so this can damage the components, until the water has evaporated but the corrosion continues

Given it was a year ago, you may have been lucky but as I said the effects of corrosion can take a long time before they become apparent.

If nothing was done at the time by way of even inspecting it beyond noticing that the LDI (liquid damage indicator) was showing that it had gotten wet then I would definitely inspect it now.

@jayeff I will have to open her up first. I do not have a camera that can take close-up shots. Is that a must for this? I do have a magnifying lamp that is used by philatelists and numismatists. Might that suffice?

Meanwhile, I found that a component is swollen. I’m posting from my iPhone and see nowhere to add a picture. Here’s what’s printed on it.

@sambodamon - Use the same method you used to post the CoconutBattery image. here create an answer (then select post as update) or go into edit mode of your question.
