Why target displaying mode not working?

Try to use my 2009 iMac 27” desktop as an external monitor, but can’t get the target displaying mode working, when connecting with the MacBook Pro 15” through mini-display port cable, the screen just flash into black, then back to itself again, samething when pressing command and F2. Any ideas why the target displaying mode not functioning?

Thanks,

Alex

Review these:

Make sure you are using the proper cable as some configurations won’t work if you use the wrong cable (iDP vs TB as well as the generation of TB)

Thanks Dan, by reviewing those two articles you referred, it seemed that the Mac OS on iMac needs to be high Sierra or earlier, the current one installed on mine is Catalina, is this the reason why TD feature won’t work?

@hru1207 - I haven't used it in years so I can't say if Mojave or Catalina still supports it.

@danj - By googling around, it seemed that OS version is the key, so, I will install Hi Sierra and see how it goes. By the way, another question I have is that I upgraded the SSD into this old iMac, the way I did is to replace the optical drive with the SSD adaptor and put the 2.5" sata SSD there, it works fine. However, I heard that doing this way may not have the same performance as to use the original hard drive slot. Is that true? Thanks in advance!

@hru1207 - You'll need to clue me in here which system your iMac or your MacBook Pro and which model of MacBook Pro (size and year)

@danj - Sorry for the confusion. The iMac is 2009 27” model with I5 cpu, and trying to install the SSD now, it seemed to me that it will be much easier just replace the optical dvd drive with the SSD adaptor, instead of replacing the original hard drive from its slot, but not sure if the performance will be the same at these two methods, any thoughts?
