Whirlpool not washing properly

When started, I can hear water running. Then it will start washing for a second, then completely stops. Sits for a second then it repeats. Doesn’t use the soap in the dispenser

Update (08/06/2021)

I have also replaced the circulation pump and drain pump. Do I need a new wash pump?

Hi @beerman4401 ,

What is the model number of the dishwasher?

Circulation pump and wash pump are usually terms used for the same pump. The water is being “circulated” to “wash” the dishes

Check that the spray arms are rotating by placing both of them in a remembered position e.g. both facing front to back or side to side and then starting the dishwasher.

After it has filled and started to wash open the door and check if they have both moved.

If they haven't, check that the holes in both the spray arms are clean and unobstructed. It is the force of the water being pumped through the spray arms that causes them to rotate.

Also check behind the kickplate (toeplate?) of the dishwasher as sometimes the tech sheet is located there, taped up in a plastic sleeve. This shows how to get into the diagnostic modes and how to test all the functions of the dishwasher and what the possible causes of any error codes that show up may mean.

Thanks for the reply. This dishwasher is only a couple of years old. I have checked the spray arms. I’ve ran the diagnostic and it’s coming up the E3 & F4 codes before I replaced the circ pump and drain pump and after. I’ve checked the drain hose and looked for obstructions. I am at a loss here….

See the 2nd answer in this link Whirlpool (WDF560SAFM2) dishwasher not circulating water as it also had no circulation but was due to a faulty harness connection to the circulation pump motor.

If that appears to be OK then the dishwasher has a diverter valve motor and disc part #18 & 20 pump, washarm and motor parts diagram that directs the water flow between the wash and drain action. Check if they are OK.

They seem ok but how do I find out for sure if they are faulty? OHM meter? The washer starts to spray then pauses, sprays then pauses. Would the diverter valve cause that?

@beerman4401

I can't find the tech sheet online but check if there is constant voltage on the circulation pump when there should be. Did you check the pump's operating connection on the control board?

Be safety aware as the pump operates at 120V AC.

Doesn't the tech sheet show how to manually test the diverter?
