Is it possible to replace the headphone socket?

The plastic of the headphone socket has broken and come apart - otherwise, the device is working fine. Any idea if this can be swapped and if so, where I can source a new socket?

Hi @docpaul,

Looking at the image of Item #7 on p.9 of the maintenance and service guide for the laptop, the headphone /microphone combo jack is hard mounted on the systemboard.

The hard part may be in finding a compatible replacement.

Use the service guide to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the systemboard.

Initially you don’t have to remove the board but perhaps once you gain access to the headphone jack check if it has some manufacturer’s markings on it that may help in locating a replacement.

If there are none then you may have to search on places such as this to find a suitable replacement. Being a combo jack means that it may have a quite complex configuration and they’re not all the same.

If you do find a compatible replacement then you will need smd soldering skills and tools to do the repair.

The alternative is to get a USB or BT headset/w mic and use that instead. Search online for ones that suit you best.

Many thanks for the reply. It's a 4 pole 7 pin socket with no other markings on it than the number 181114.

@docpaul

7 pin makes it more difficult to find as can be seen from this link the configuration might vary as to the number of pins and what they're used for.

Perhaps you can find a faulty laptop i.e. totally not repairable and scavenge one from it.

Hi @uyager

Use the service guide linked above to access the headphone jack and check if the headphone piece can be gently pushed out from the socket from the motherboard side with a pin etc

Yes, there are all things which you can do related to laptops from small to major repairs. One of them included is the headphone jack problem. You can fix it and I would recommend approaching to a normal laptop repair vendor but not the official laptop service center which would eventually cost more. Simple and affordable solution. Search for laptop repair on your mobile phone and bingo Google Maps results.
