Can I fix my headphone jack without disassembling?

My headphone jack has gone bad again... One of the channels won't work. Can I fix it without disassembling the iPod? Could I use a needle to move the leads or something?

I had a 3rd generation and the same thing happened. Christmas was coming and I was likely getting a 4th gen, so I decided to try taking it apart (The screen was cracked too. Not much to lose.). It didn't go to well... I'm a salvager not a repairman...

Great job listening to pollytintop. Now, all you have left to do, is accept the answer. That way people with the same problem as yours will know what to try and what works. Again, great job.....;-)

You could try.. But if that doesn't work the part needs replacing so you'll have to open it up. Use a toothpick so you don't short anything, this may just be dust or dirt on the prongs

Thanks pollytintop! I figured it was a bent lead but it turns out it was just dust. Once you said that I got an air compressor and blew out the dust (From a bit of a distance of course. Didn't want to blow my iPod inside out...). It worked great! Saved me some money and kept me from taking a huge risk.

Try twisting and lightly pulling (without disconnecting it) on the headphone and see if you can get some sound. If so then it probably is something in the jack itself. If not the jack itself will probably need to be replaced.

Inside the jack are two prong/connections, one at each side. If you are only hearing out of one earphone it is likely that one of the prongs has been pushed back and is no longer connecting as well as it should. You can use a needle or suchlike to lift the prongs out and improve connection. I just carried out this very repair moments ago after reading about it elsewhere and it worked a treat.

Are you certain the headphones are good? If so then it sounds like the headphone jack needs to be replaced which would require opening up the device.
