Kenwood: First fridge stopped working, then freezer

Hi. I bought a Kenwood refrigerator just under 3 years ago. Never had a problem until around a week ago. Out of the blue, one day, the fridge’s cooling went down quite dramatically. By the night, it wasn’t working at all.

After reading a few theories online, I decided to turn the whole device off for the best part of the day and let everything melt, specifically in the freezer where a lot of ice had built up.

When I turned it back on, the situation was pretty much the same. The fridge wasn’t cooling at all; just the panel at the back was slightly cool to the touch, but the temperature inside wasn’t cool at all.

In the meantime, the freezer was functioning perfectly, so I continued to use it as normal, though I removed much of the contents and stored them in the deep freezer, leaving it mostly empty. Due to COVID restrictions, it’s not a very straightforward process to call a repairperson at home right now.

The freezer worked well for around 5 days, but since last night, the ice in it (and everything stored in the freezer) started to melt. I figured that I should turn it off once again for a while. I let all the ice melt, cleared it up, then turned it back on later.

Since then, the freezer is now essentially in the same condition as the fridge. It’s slightly cool to the touch, but it’s not cooling within the compartment at all. It appears that both fridge and freezer are now in the same state, and they aren’t providing any cooling at all.

I don’t have previous experience with refrigerators and don’t really know what the issue could be. I’m prepared to call a repairman now since the problem seems to be quite serious. However, I just wanted to check and see if anyone can share tips as to what the possible reason could be.

TIA. Much appreciated.

If you're a bit handy, open up the back and check your fan motor. See if that is working. That little motor going out can stop the whole thing cooling. If it is, then use a multimeter and check the capacitor at the compressor down below. Otherwise I would call a repair tech in.

Thanks for the advice. I can handle tech items like computers but don’t have much experience with refrigerators, etc. I think I’ll have to resort to calling a repair technician, then. Appreciate the response.

Hate to have to tell people that but some things not everyone can fix. There's a number of things that could be going wrong. Evap fan issues, defrost control issues, possible defrost heater (if equipped) failure. I hear ya, though. I'm good with stuff like this, but computers might as well be alien tech. Never been good at that sorta thing, myself.
