Is the replacement iFixit sata cable rated as sata II or sata III?

Later today, my sata drive cable will arrive from iFixit. (Thanks guys) In the meantime I’ve read all the posts about this machine and learnt a huge amount…thank you all.

Mrs Poppy has gifted me her ‘old’ MacBook Pro 2012 13”. Gawd bless’er. (Mint, with very few hours and even only 24 cycles on the battery.) I’ve maxed out the ram and the new ssd is in an external caddy with fresh Mojave downloaded from Apple…and some of my apps, photos and music. It will principally be plugged into my hi-fi as a music source. All working nicely so far. Just waiting on the new cable for the transplant.

My twist on the dozens of drive cable questions already posted, is:

This machine was built in January 2016. Was the Sata III revision cable being installed as standard by Apple then? (It was bought direct from Apple as a refurb)

And is the iFixit cable the thick version of the sata II…or the same spec as the Sata III cable that Apple eventually ended up installing?

Thanks for a hugely enjoyable and informative resource.

Your system should have the newer rev of the cable SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) rated. Even still you could have a worn cable as described here Your Hard Drive Cable Is A Ticking Time Bomb So you should place a stipe of electricians tape on the uppercase to help protect it.

While that’s the basics, mis-handling of the cable is a common issue where people damage it! You don’t want any creases in the cable. If you see any then you should replace it!

Thanks, Dan. I suspected that because it was so late in the production run and a refurb it would the upgraded one. But you and your fellow posters easily convinced me that a replacement was prudent.

I’m hoping too that I can get confirmation from anybody with the iFixit replacement installed that it is also SATA III rated.

Despite being on the cusp of being demoted from Legacy to Obsolete by Apple, this is still a great machine.

I thought it might be a good idea to establish if the iFixit cable does conform to the SATA III specification, so I have contacted customer support to see if they know. Interestingly, the replacement has the Apple 821-1480-A identifier, which was the part number of the first revision. (I’m aware that this does not necessarily mean it’s not the updated spec)

Another wee note I’d like to add: I did not clone the drive using CCC or Super-Duper. Instead, as advised, I used internet recovery and then migration assistant. This was due to reports that cloning does not restore the recovery partition. However, as I have routinely used Super-Duper over the years I decided to download the latest version anyway. It appears that v3.3.1 may indeed now restore a recovery partition. When I’m finished with the installation of this drive I’ll have a go on another drive to see if this is the case - and report back.

@tallboypoppy - I use this cable and it works just fine with SATA III SSD's which hits the I/O limit of the SATA III channel MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable

The very last produced cable is P/N 923-00975, from 923-0104 Apple did five additional buys of the part from different suppliers, each under a different P/N revision: 604-07597, 821-00698, 923-0741, 821-2049, Each one of these are SATA III capable.

Dan....that’s a sensational amount of detail and just what I was looking for. Thank-you very much.

I also loved the wee bag of sweeties from the iFixit team that came with the order! Details like that make the difference. Thanks again.
