Status led in iPhone?

In step 10 of the teardown you say, "What appears to be the ambient light sensor and status LED comes off the display assembly."

Could you explain what the "status led" is? Is it equivalent to a notification led?

Thanks.

@markus weiher, Do you have any idea what the infrared led is used for?

i want to bring a little bit light into the darkness - the 4s has no status led.

the dark led is an infrared emitting led!

EDIT: thats really funny - is it to hard to understand ? - it's not a notification led.

but to show it to you, here comes a pretty bad picture of it

since infrared light is not vsible - we can't see it

but you can make it visible with a digital camera - pint at the earpiece speaker and wake up the 4gs - et voila - the infrared light is "visible"

I think they mistook the proximity sensor, which would appear like an LED and sensor pair.

Nope... proximity sensor and the light sensor are seperate.. To me it seems like a Status LED.. Its quite unclear yet!

I questioned that too because now there is a new opening in the casing next to the proximity sensor and ambient light, might be a status led

I hope it's a notification LED.

youre saying its infrared? how can you be sure? just curious...

Your "Dark LED" is the Proximity Sensor. It is shooting out IR which bounces back and hits a receiver which tells the phone when it is next to your face. That shuts off the screen so you dont inadvertently touch and trigger actions on the screen. Right next to it is an ambient light sensor that the phone uses to automatically control the brightness of the screen to preserve battery life. My question is just over from there there is another hole in the case with an unknown function. It can be barely seen from the front of a black 4S and is invisible due to being painted on a white iphone 4s. The round hole is plainly visible in the teardown and is not in any of the previous phones.

I'm curious as to what the sensor does because my case covers it up. Is it for the new camera system or something?

I understand what Barry is saying. I know where the ambient light/proximity sensors are. There is a new hole just to the left of these. What does this do? See the picture below.

behind that particular hole is the ambient light sensor (tried it with a led flashlight)
