iPod dropped in pets water, was working now isn't. help!

My daughter's ipod touch 1st gen was dropped into my dog's water bowl for only a few seconds like 5 or 6 days ago. It had a silicone case on it and the tab inside the earphone jack is white. It worked for a little while after it had been dropped, maybe 30 minutes or so then shut off. It wouldn't turn back on then but the next day it worked again for a little while. Same thing happened, it just shut off and wouldn't come back on. It did this a couple of times. I turned it on again this morning and it only worked for about 2 minutes or so before it shut down. Then I can't get it to do anything if it was not plugged in. I took the thing apart and looked for any signs of water damage but didn't find ANY. (Never had any water spots on the screen or anything.) I cleaned all the contact points with a soft bristled tooth brush cuz I read that somewhere and put it back together. Still no luck. I plugged it into a computer (not the one with itunes on it) and reset it and it tried to download itunes to the computer. I was so excited :) It was short lived :'(. I removed it from that computer and plugged it into the one with itunes on it and got nothing. Tried resetting it again and then it went crazy. It kept turning on and off but never got past the white apple screen. I unplugged it and that stopped. The only thing I can get it to do now is turn on to the apple screen and only if it is plugged in. Is there anything I can try to hopefully fix this thing? My husband doesn't want to buy another one for our daughter but I feel bad bc it was her younger sister that dropped it in the first place. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated! Thank you and sorry this question was so long [it said to be detailed :)]

Katie, I would start with this guide. The next thing I'd definitely do is to replace the battery. It seems like this is one of your problems. The iPod's do very weird things when the batteries get flaky. Water and iPod batteries do not like each other at all ;-) Also, it seems like you are using two computers.Safe your library and reinstall iTunes, just to make sure that you are not having any software issues. Good Luck to you.

I only had it plugged in to my comp to charge it bc I don't have a long cord and knew it was the wrong one. I was hoping stopping it and plugging it in to the right one would at least allow me to transfer everything to my itunes acct. bc that hasn't been done in forever. Although, about an hour after I posted this, it all of the sudden came back on (plugged in to the wrong comp. again). I checked an app and it worked so I went and plugged it into the right comp and I was able to transfer everything to my itunes acct so yay. It's still working as of now so I'll wait and see. If I have anymore problems out of it I'll be sure to try the battery replacement out, but I have no idea how to solder anything. This is the longest it's stayed on since the accident so I am hoping it is ok now. Also, is the water damage indicator supposed to be white if there is no water damage? I find it odd that it is still white when the ipod was completely submerged in water. I am new to ipods so please excuse my ignorance ;) Thanks!

No, the indicator should have turned a reddish color....good luck and hope things work out. Let us know if you need further help.

Another question to consider...did your daughter have the ipod jailbroken? That could have some part in the problem. I used to have an ipod touch that i jumped into a pool with. I just stuck it in a back with rice, the next day it worked just fine! Well, about a month later i had a friend jailbrake the ipod for me. Of course, me being the hard headed kid i am, jumped into the same pool again with the ipod in my pocket. I went through the same exact process. Stuck it in a bag of rice over night then plugged it into the computer, no luck. The screen kept on flashing the apple logo. But here is a heads up! If you take it to an apple store, sometimes they will replace it for free on the spot like they did with mine. Because it was a fixable problem, they didn't mind completely replacing it! Remember Apple is all about customer satisfaction, hope this helped.

It is not jailbroken but I have opened it. Would they still take it back? I am not even the original buyer, I got it from a guy off craigslist but haven't had any problems out of it until now. It worked for almost 24 hours but I was on it just a minute ago and it shut off again :( Thought I had it all fixed but I guess not.

katie..first things that fail are battery in waterdamage..I'd do what OT3 suggested and swap it. Signs of a dying battery are shorter working periods, longer charge time, shutting down at odd moments, only working on charger. These are all things you have reported. OT3 is very good at his ipod repair, take his advice. :-)
