Ordered a new battery, goes from ~40% to under 10% very quickly

Hey iFixit Team,

I recently ordered a new battery from iFixit. I replaced it in my Macbook Pro and power cycled a few times, and things worked as expected for a few days. After about three days, the battery worked fine above 50%, but once it got near 40%, it would show as a red battery icon and though I haven’t watched it happen, it seems to jump from ~40% to under 10% near instantly. Does my battery have damaged cells?

Thanks

Let’s get a better view of things, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Agregar imágenes a una pregunta existente

Added the snapshot! Thanks!

Any update on this? My battery is still going red at 50%, with warning of low batteries in the 40%s, despite doing multiple battery resets, following the rules exactly.

Help!!! I think my battery is a lemon!

@Tegan Elizabeth Bold - Where did you buy the battery?

- de

I bought it here on ifixit. I can sent the order number if needed.

I don’t see anything amiss here, Did you follow the procedure to calibrate your battery?

I looked at the iFixit procedure, and one thing I noticed that I did not do correctly was allowing it to rest for two hours while fully charged and having it fit for five hours after it fell asleep. If I follow that procedure now, will it recalibrate the battery?

Thanks!

If done correctly yes

This did not resolve the issue. I charged the laptop to 100%, kept it plugged in for well over two hours, then had it die around midnight before sleeping, so it was completely dead overnight, around 9 hours.

The battery is still not behaving correctly, same behavior as the original post.

Two hours is not enough time to fully charge a new battery! Let it charge up over night after resetting the SMC.

I still think you've got your low and high water marks held in SMC's EEROM that is messed up.

If your system dies again restart it and quickly take a fresh CoconutBattery snapshot and post it so we can see where we are.

I may have misspoke, I didn't have it plugged in for two hours, I had it plugged in *at* 100% for well over two hours, it was plugged in all day, until late night when I unplugged it and played youtube full screen until it died, and then went to sleep.
