Swollen Battery After SSD Upgrade?

Recently, about 3 months ago, I replaced my SSD from 256gb to 1tb. I used an M.2 NVME SSD Convert Adapter (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07V...). This was pretty straightforward and relatively easy. Could this have caused my battery to swell?

Also, I have had my Macbook Pro for about 5 years. I have always kept in on the charger when not in use and it hardly ever drops below 80%. I do not use is everyday, I would say it is a 3-4 times per week use for about 30 minutes to an hour, on average. I’ve read that it may just be the time to replace the battery, which is okay, I just want to make sure that if I do replace the battery, that it will not swell again because of the SSD.

Sadly yes! The adapter/SSD combo can short out which in turn can cause the battery to discharge at a fast rate which causes it to overheat and then bang the battery swells up!

This issue is these adapters are just not well designed to accept every possible SSD one could use. Each SSD vender lays out the components differently so the a short is possible.

I fully understand the desire to find a cheaper solution than getting an Apple or properly designed pin compatible SSD like OWC or Transcend SSD’s.

I wish I could give you a more positive answer, I can't. I personally don't recommend using these adapters I've taken out a lot of them for different reasons.

It all gets back to the cost and benefit. If you add the cost of the battery with the adapter and SSD did you really save anything?

Maybe it would be smarter just going with a properly designed SSD solution and having someone back it up with a warranty.
