iPad Pro- restarting and changing wallpaper after screen repair

Okay. This is a long story.

tldr: iPad restarting randomly and changed wallpapers after LCD/digitizer assembly replacement. This repair comes after first repair where purchased LCD assembly stopped working after being installed for weeks. No drops.

I got an LCD/digitizer screen assembly from another company before I purchased one from iFixit. The screen was cracked on the original. I replaced the screen and reinstalled the home button. No problems, everything worked wonderfully for about 2 weeks. Then touch functionality stopped. Then home button functionality stopped. Then the screen turned off entirely and stayed black. I investigated and could not isolate the problem. Pressing down on the logic board while the iPad was open allowed the LCD screen to come on, but touch still would not work. I looked at all the connectors with a microscope, but could not find a problem in the logic board connectors. It’s summer in North Carolina, and I don’t have central A/C, so wondering if a cheap part would be affected by that. Was not left in the sun, just in the warmth of my living room. Could not isolate the problem.

SO. Ordered a screen assembly from iFixit to try and isolate if it was the iPad or the screen itself. Replaced and touch functionality has returned, but it randomly restarts and has changed the wallpaper backgrounds. I’m going to remove the screen and try and look at the battery connectors in the logic board, as the guide I was using during the first repair did not have the warning about using a battery blocker being outdated. I have not fully installed the screen with glue however, so maybe this is causing a short in connections not being fully pressed together.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I also want to return the other LCD screen and try and get my money back (since they say they have a lifetime warranty) but they are saying they won’t accept the part after it has been installed… is there anyone that can cheaply test this screen so I can try and recoup some of my costs? Thanks.

hello Michelle,

unfortunately your damage has nothing to do with neither the adhesive the screen nor the connection to the motherboard. The blame is the multi-driver, a small electronic board soldered to the flexible tape of the new screen. Originally, the screens come without a driver, the one from the broken screen should be soldered. This ensures full compatibility of the new screen with the entire system. Unfortunately, Chinese manufacturers do not have access to the original Apple drivers. Instead, they built their own, dramatically different quality and functionality. Most often it causes problems with touch (ghost touches), flashing, turning off and bootloops. There are more and more cases of internal short circuit and collapse of the entire system.

My advice: if you still have the original shattered screen - use that driver. Return the purchased screen, if possible. But I'm afraid that if you've removed the protective tapes, there's nothing to be done. You will only have to refer to the warranty services. Another solution: leave a new screen for yourself, but desolder the non-original driver. In its place, solder the one from the broken screen. Your tablet will gain a long forgotten feature - full functionality :-) Again some unfortunately: soldering is difficult, if you have no experience then use the repair shop. The controller is very delicate and the flexible tapes are extremely sensitive to temperature. A steady hand is required and some really good service equipment. Don't take advantage if you haven't soldered microelectronics before.

  • regards and fingers crossing :-)
