MacBook A1342 blank screen/vertical lines

I bought a cheap A1342 the other day, the computer has this issue where if you power it on all it shows on the display is a black screen (but the backlight is on) or garbled vertical lines in various shades of grayscale. If you press the power button, it immediately powers down. The computer has no hard drive, so I’m expecting at least the flashing ? folder icon. Nothing, even on an external display. I hooked up a drive I took from a 2008 MacBook with 10.11 on it, the computer would do the same black screen/garbled lines except this time it stays on for about 5 minutes. The only way to shut down the computer is to hold the button down or wait the 5 minutes.

It isn’t an LCD issue - I’ve checked it. No idea what to do next. Commands (e.g. command-option-P-R) are still working, with the exception of those that go to a certain screen (e.g. boot picker) because well, I have no screen.

I’ve given up at this point. The computer doesn’t even show the apple. If anyone has a solution please reply and I will try the solution.

Well that's disappointing, just as I expected. I guess I'm just going to use it if for some reason I need to hear the Mac bong over and over again.

Funny! I have a freind who setup his iPhone with the Mac's Bong as the message tone ;-}

Don't forget to accept the answer - Sorry I couldn't offer an easier (cheaper) solution.

@danj Are the 2.4GHz logic boards compatible with a 2.26 model? I know this sounds stupid but I don't see many diffeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerencesbetween that and the 2.26 models (I have no knowledge on A1342s)

I think you'll be OK, I haven't messed with swapping around the logic boards in this series. Looking at the typical things that could mess you up I don't see any gotcha's

@danj I guess the only way to find out is to test it.

My keyboard died midway through writing that reply, so it just ended up spamming Es
