Computer will not power on

The computer makes no sound, nothing. Tried all the steps for resetting SMC with a T2. Opened the back and saw this:

It’s still under the limited warranty. Any ideas on how to fix / if Apple will?

Well, it’s not smart opening your system while its still covered under warranty, you don’t want to give Apple a reason to deny your coverage!

What I can tell you is your logic board had a failure! The small tantalum capacitor located marked here failed and the spillage from it is marked as well.

This should be covered under warranty! The issue now is did you leave enough markings for Apple to question things. If they deny you, you’ll need a new logic board which depending on which model you have is somewhere between $1,000 to 3,000 - One big OUCH!

Thank you! I just removed the back cover and put it back on. Hopefully it’s fine. Thanks for the answer and I’ll comment here when I get a response.

Apple stores here are closed so I have an appointment with a certified repair store from the Apple store reservation system.

@danj they claim they found water damage and it’s not covered. I’m asking them why they think there is water damage. Any advice?

- de

I didn't see it, did you have a spill? Be honest.

@danj My kid dropped a glass of water on the table the day before, but it didn’t touch my computer (the actual water spilled on the table didn’t reach my computer). It was cleaned up before it touched the case, which is why i didn’t think anything of it until the tech said that. So the only thing I can think is a drop splashed when it spilled (there is a big vent there on the 16”) and perfectly hit that capacitor.... that seems crazy to me it’d be enough to ruin a 3k computer.

To be clear, I don’t think water actually touched it. This is openness about the only case i could think of. I’d say the kids splash something every day...

Opening a computer case can void its warranty. Please call Apple customer support at 1-800-275-2273 for more details.

Now that the case has already been opened, have you tried replacing the battery? There is a tutorial at the following link:

The battery is not the issue here

you can try to replace the capacitor if you can find an exact size and rating and if you have a little skill with a fine -tipped iron
