Harman Kardon AVR151/230 amber light blinking

Service center technician said the main board has to be replaced.

But they are not wiling to repair the main board in component level. Guess they prety much saves time but replacing the whole board rather than spend time locating the faulty component.

Can anyone give me a starting point to start diagnose the main board by myself. I’m a hobbyist and have slight knowledge of electronics.

So you can be technical with your answers.

Help would be highly appreciated!

Hi,

I don’t know what a blinking amber light indicates but usually with electronics a good starting point is to measure the various power supply rails in the device to make sure that they’re all supplying the correct voltage.

Next is to visually examine the circuit board for any obvious component damage such as burnt out or heat stressed components and faulty capacitors, (leaking or domed).

Presumably the processor has tried to be reset by performing the reset procedure just in case this is what the blinking light might indicate?

Here’s how to do this:

To reset the AVR's processor:

1. Press the front-panel Standby/On switch for more than three seconds to turn the AVR off (the Power Indicator will turn amber).

2. Press and hold the front-panel Surround Modes button for at least 5 seconds until the RESET message appears on the front-panel Message Display

Here’s the service manual for the receiver, It has schematics which should help although it appears that it is basically the CPU that does everything, but it is better than nothing.

Hopefully a start.

Thanks jeyeff for reply,

Amber light blinking indicates a system had gone to a protection mode. Most cases I've googled says it must be a power line failure. I've checked all the power lines coming in to the board, and seems all good. Thanks for the service manual as I have already gone through it many times and have a tough time finding the schematics for the main board. I cam only see the PCB layout and design but not the schematics. I have gone through the reset process several times and it did not help either.

Anything else would be helpful.

Thanks again.

@Jinantha Perera

If it means "protection" then given that the schematics aren't complete start looking at the Amp board (it mentions in the schematic "to Amp board".

Usually protection is about the audio amps outputs or the voltages being supplied to the speakers being affected. It can also be about thermal protection but one step at a time

Have looked at the CPU schematic and cannot see a designated "prot". input to the CPU so it may be called something else.

On the schematics on p131 there is mention of "protect"so you may have to search through all the schematics available for that term and then see what they relate to.

Try searching online for the "board number" schematics for the various boards. Hopefully there may be some online.

Otherwise you may just have to start checking individual components, starting with the Amp board using an Ohmmeter and then if one is suspect i.e. s/c or o/c then test them out of circuit (presumably you've already done a close visual inspection of all the boards?)

I have replaced C1201 Capacitor which is on the mainboard and close to powersupply connector. That is all.

Dear All,

I am also struggling with the orange blinking problem with my AVR 161. I am little into electronics, but interesting thing, when I fist opened the case up, I saw the socked on blue main board was half off, I put it down, and the device was online again. I listen music for some 10 minutes etc. then one day after it failed again. I put it on the table, opened again, check some cables, have some little touch on them, then again it was working. yesterday I watched a full movie with all speakers working very well. Today it is again off.

I checked fuse, the thermo switch on transistor right after the AC input, as per my knowledge, I can not see any swellen capacitor or burnt component. So I am stuck :(

I am thinking to but a capacitor checker, and if I will be able to check them on board.

Any suggestion or help will be most appreciated.

Teşekkürler.

Block Image

My JBL AVR101 had the same issue.

  1. Checked all voltages , appeared fine.
  2. Checked all electrolytic capacitors
  3. Checked smd ceramic caps; couple of them showed continuity (still on the board) c1386& c1381
  4. See image. This block was the problem. However resolved after board was cleaned with ipa
