The Hosts issue is reported with iPhone 4 and you have a 3GS. But, anyway it would not hurt to just check your Computer Hosts file to make sure gs.apple.com is not in your Hosts file. Search on your computer for 'Hosts', open with a word processor, make sure gs.apple.com is not there.

A recommended way to fix Error 1013 is to try restoring on another computer. Make sure you have a good USB cable, and use a dedicated USB port (one on the back of computer). Turn off securitiy, anti-virus software.

Nope the Host file is clean. I just cant figure it out with this 3gs. My iphone 4 does fine with the same cord and same usb port. I also restored a iPod touch on the same computer. I have had the phone apart just to see if there was anything loose and nothing. As soon as it goes through the restore process it will say error 1013 and then go into DFU mode. The restore loading bar will go all the way to the end almost completely full except for a little tiny bit and it will never finish. I quit messing with it and one day i picked it up and it was fine. I picked it up and slide to unlock and i could scroll through the pages. Then about an hour later back into DFU mode.

Try another computer on another internet network is Apple recomendation. Do that next.

Couldn't hurt to clean the pins in the iPhone dock port with a clean toothbrush and some Isopropyll Alcohol. Try Restore again.

Did you try updated it? if that doesn't work, then try using tinyumbrella (google it). then follow the steps on how to kick it out of recovery mode.
