My MacBook starts up with disk utility like there is no system

I upgraded this MacBook 5,1 with a Samsung SSD drive. I don’t use a lot, but recently when I turn it on, disk utility runs like there was no system. I quit the app, then choose Restart and it starts up normally. Old Mac computers used to have a small lithium battery. Some say it is a capacitor. Might this the problem?

Well your system doesn’t use a PRAM battery like the desktops as it has a super cap to hold a charge long enough for you to swap out the primary battery if it was low and/or if you had the charger cord connected.

So this sounds like your system is launching the recovery partition (hidden) on the drive as the primary partition was deleted!

At this point you’ll need to reestablish the partition and reinstall the needed OS this system needs.

Now the fun part! The highest OS-X release this system supports is El Capitan 10.11.6. But you have a nasty surprise as Apple has long since expired the OS installers certificate so it won’t run if you have the year set to this year. You’ll need to back date your system to 2015 and make sure your system doesn’t get reset by the time server if you connect to the internet.

Here’s a bit more on the certificate issue If you've got an old macOS install image, it will probably stop working today.

The other approach is getting a fixed OS installer from Apple How to upgrade to OS X El Capitan jump down to Step 4 download the updated installer clicking on the blue URL link: Download OS X El Capitan.

Should I make a clean install then? I don’t think there any deleted partition because as soon as I restart, it works perfectly.

Try just re-installing the OS (don't format the drive) as there is some reason Disk Utility is loading.
