Water enters but wash cycle won't start

Thermador DW44ZP/16. Water enters, but the wash cycle won’t start, just hums, will drain well. I have replaced the water inlet valve and the circulation pump and still the same issue. The circulation pump did have some shredded plastic bits from the impeller so really thought I had found the problem. The arms are free and clear. What else could be wrong? The float switch? I want this to be the LAST time I take this apart. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Hi @hgioia,

A humming motor that is not turning is indicative of a problem with the motor windings, the start/run capacitor on the motor or perhaps insufficient voltage supply to the motor.

Did the new circulation pump have a new capacitor mounted on it or did you have to use the old one? Did you check that the capacitor’s electrical connections are secure and not loose etc?

Can you check the voltage being applied to the motor when it is humming?

Be safety aware if you decide to do this as the motor operates at mains supply voltage which can be lethal

It could also just be that the replacement circulation pump is faulty. I answered a post just some weeks ago where the circulation pump was replaced and the dishwasher still had the same symptoms as before which were the same as your dishwasher i.e. fills but then didn’t wash, just hums. In the end it turned out that the new pump was faulty out of the box.

Have you still got the old circulation pump? If it was just that the impeller was broken but that the motor still worked you may be able to hook it up to the dishwasher again and see if it operates. Not to pump the water per se but just to prove that if it turns on without humming then the new pump should as well. If the old pump works then try swapping the capacitor on the old pump to the new pump and try it again. It may be that the capacitor is faulty and not the motor or perhaps swap the capacitors before trying the old pump. ;-)
