Major recurring problems with microphone/port repairs on 8 and 8 plus.

Hi all,

I am working in a repair shop in Ireland and in the last few days we have been having major problems with charging port/bottom microphone replacements on iPhone 8’s and 8 Plus.

What’s happening is this: The port is replaced but the microphone seems to fade in and out. Usually there is a bit of range, you can usually hold the phone an inch or two away from the mouth and it would be fine but now unless your mouth is touching the grill you can’t hear anything.

Sometimes it’s ok but it goes after a while. One thing we have noticed which is an indicator that there is or will be problems is that when you click a button (vol, mute etc) or tap the housing, move the phone around in your hand etc. you can hear it on the other end and you’re not supposed to be able to usually. It’s like a noise cancelling feature isn’t working or working too well, we don’t know which.

We have tried a lot of things from new ports from different suppliers, we have changed the rear facing mic too, we have even have swapped out an original charging port from an unrepairable phone and still nothing.

We are getting a lot of phones coming back into us and haven’t run into this problem before and we have no idea of what’s causing it and how to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Try jabbing interdental brushes into the port. make sure they're dry when you do it, and blow into the ports occasionally. This should make them work better without need for replacement

Are the all the charging ports coming from the same supplier? I would buy a charging port from a different supplier and see if this fixes the problem. You could have bought a defective lot of parts.

Hi, thankyou for the reply. We have some left over from before the lockdown that were fine before, it has also happened when we have put an original charging port into it so I'm not sure if it's the ports that are the issue.

Check if the microphones does not have protective Adhesive.

Some times original adhesive is left on phone and new charging ports comes with adhesive on microphones.

Hi, thankyou for your reply.

The ports we have do have a thin layer of clear adhesive on them. Our technician was cleaning the adhesive left over on the inside of the chassis, would you suggest not cleaning that?

*Bump*

I am having this exact same issue. Can confirm that the problem is not related to the charging port itself, as I have now tried 3 charging ports from 3 suppliers. I have cleaned out the mesh and thoroughly removed adhesive that could be blocking sound from making it to the mic. have confirmed that the microphone is lined up properly and seated firmly against the plastic that sits between the chassis and the mic, and that the plastic mounting bits are seated properly in the phone. If I hold it up to the light, I can see clear through to where the microphone mounts. Problem seems to only be with the right-hand microphone. I am completely stumped.
