Laptop having some issues.

Hello everyone, Recently my laptop's been having some issues.

While playing games like csgo and dota 2 whenever I play it always starts lagging. They used to work with at least 30 fps but now it's just around 10-15 fps.

Als, the laptop fan is now so loud whenever it speeds up and I can hear some vibration. Everything else aside from playing games has so far had no problems.

I'm not really an expert on diagnosing and stuff so any form of help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi @sirt1993 ,

If the fan speed only increases when playing games it means that the CPU is having to work harder and it needs more cooling. This is normal in certain situations but the fan shouldn't be at high speed all the time.

Assuming that you have Win10 OS installed here are some things to check:

a). Check what programs are being loaded at Startup to see if they are necessary and what impact they may be having on the laptop’s system resources. Search online for what the programs listed are if you don’t recognise the names.

Go to Task Manager > Startup. (right click on the taskbar to find the Task Manager link)

b). Have you checked that the video drivers are up to date?

Go to Device Manager > Display Adapters > click on the “>” symbol to the left of the entry to expand the list > right click on the display adapter entry > Update drivers and follow the prompts. You need to be online to do this. (To get to Device Manager, right click on the Windows’ Start button on the left side of the Taskbar and click on the Device Manager link)

c). I don’t know the games that you’re referring to, but if they are online games check the speed of your internet connection, as this can affect the frame rate. Most service provider’s have a speed check facility on their website that you can use. It is better to use their speed check rather than a generic online speed test as you don’t know how many links are between you and the tester which may give a false indication of the true speed.

d). Check that the laptop’s fan exhaust vent is clear and unobstructed so as to improve the airflow from the laptop.

It may be that the laptop needs to be opened and the CPU thermal paste be refreshed and the fan properly cleaned to improve the heat removal from the CPU. There are videos on YouTube that show how to refresh the thermal paste on CPUs. Here’s the ifixit Acer Aspire 5336-2524 Motherboard Replacement guide which shows how to access the fan and to remove the heatsink so that the CPU can be accessed.

Hopefully a start.

Is your HDD storage almost filled? This might be the reason as once the HDD gets filled above a certain storage amount, the speed of the hdd slows down a lot, resulting in lags and stutters.

Also, let me know which laptop are you using? Can you recommend some good gaming laptops?

Yeah, I guess I am low on storage as well. Will clear it and see how it goes. Thanks

I am using the Acer Helio 300. Sure. I found this list which mentioned good options that you can consider.
