HDD data recovery with a Liquid Damaged Logicboard

My buddy spilled something on his MacBook. He took it to a shop and after a few weeks they returned it to him and say they couldn’t do anything. I took a look for him and there was a pretty good amount of corrosion around the usb-c ports. Some simple troubleshooting by shooting for power at the 2R7 inductor with the usb-c charger plugged in and got 0 volts. From what I was able to find online, it seems the charging circuit is most likely fried. My buddy only wants the data from his HDD, but again, it would seem there is no real easy way to do it without getting a working 2016-2017 MacBook Pro. Am I missing something here? Is there anyway to recover the data without a working MacBook Pro? Also, any tips on what could be fried and what I should check? Thanks in advance.

@munkeyjoe you have removed the board to clean the corrosion from both sides? What 820-XXXXX is your board? Where else did you check for power? You tried to use the power on pads to start it? Post some pictures of your board (both sides)that are a bit more focused.

@oldturkey03 - Sadly the newer 2016 & 2017 Fn models don't have exposed power pads. The area effected is around the Thunderbolt 3 ports.

I did remove the board nothing got underneath it and I haven’t checked for power anywhere else really I’m just trying to get the data from his HDD for him he, Apple told him he would lose his data if he takes it to them.

@munkeyjoe what board number is this? You got to test more than one inductor to find out where (and if) there is a short

I think you need to ship out the system to someone with the deeper skills and needed parts.

Think of it like doctors, you go to your primary physician for a check up, clearly their skills are diagnostic and deal with simple issues.

You go to a hospital to have your appendix removed when it gets infected. But, its likely they don’t have the deeper skills to handle cancer.

This is where a specialist is needed! Thats the case here!

Where are you located country and nearest city?

For reference here one option for a logic board: 13” MacBook Pro - Logic Board, 2.0GHz i5 8GB Apple P/N 661-05073 - Used

Makes sense and that is probably what he will do. I live in Japan, we should have some places nearby as soon as the start reopening everything out here.

One question, can you swap just the logic board out? Will everything work or are some accessories married to the logic board like the home button on an iPhone 8?

- de

Sure replacing the logic board will work! Then Transfer the SSD to it.

- de

Data recovery on the 2016 requires a special rig setup, usually sold only to Apple Stores and ASPs.

- de

@mayer The Touch Bar models the Fn models still have a removable SSD! Solid state drive for Late 2016 and Mid 2017 MacBook Pro without Touch Bar
