Frigidaire FRS26KR4AW5 won’t cool

I have an 18 year old fridge that stopped cooling and I’d really like to repair it as buying a new one isn’t an option for a number of reasons right now.

The problem started shortly after we lost power and it returned. The fridge is plugged into a 3 prong outlet with a ground. Never had any problems with this fridge cooling or icing up in the freezer section. I’ve kept the fridge and freezer dials on the coldest setting for 8 years.

I’ve cleaned the coils in the back and verified the fan next to the compressor is clean and spins freely, and verified that the coils are clean in the back of the freezer and that the fan there is clean and spins freely.

I did notice that the compressor kicks on from time to time and it does get warm so it seems like it’s working and it’s not an issue with the start relay.

The coils in the back of the freezer never get cold. I’ve shut it off a couple of times and let it sit for a day and when I turn it on it gets marginally cold in the freezer but not quite normal fridge temperature. It never gets to freezing.

Any ideas?

Just operated it with the back panel off and it does seem like the coils are slowly getting cold. The top one that feeds into the coils from the top is frosting by the others aren’t yet (only been about 20 minutes).

Hi @bergs ,

The evaporator unit in the freezer compartment should be icy cold i.e. 0 deg. F (~-18 deg. C) and the evaporator fan should be operating. The fan will stop if a door is opened and start again when the doors are closed.

If the evap unit is not icy cold after the compressor has been operating for a while then there may be a problem with the sealed system. Either a blockage (are the condenser coils near the compressor warm? They should be, as they release the heat absorbed by the refrigerant flowing through the evap unit), a faulty compressor or a lack of refrigerant caused by a leak, (check for any oily residues below the compressor or the condenser coils).

If the compressor shuts off after only running for a short while, and the evap unit is not cold it may be a faulty thermostat or defrost thermostat.

Here’s a link that shows some possible reasons why the freezer and therefore also the refrigerator may be too warm if it is not a problem with the sealed system.

If it is determined that it may be a sealed system problem, then due to environmental regulations regarding the handling of refrigerant gases this has to be checked by a licenced refrigerator repairer.
