Whirlpool WRS555SIHZ00 not making ice

I have a Whirlpool Side-by-Side (exact model in Title) and the ice maker stopped working but the water pressure appears to be adequate. I have tried a couple things already…

1) checked the on/off switch (it was on, still not working)

2) checked water pressure - appears to be okay

3) filter was changed about 1 month and half ago

4) took out the ice that was in the tray (no blockages that would be causing it not to drop ice in the bin)

5) took the bin and ice maker out completely and checked for any frozen components (none found)

6) minimal ice build up on water tube that dispenses into the maker (cleared out)

7) removed water filter (recommended elsewhere to see if the filter was clogged, not sure if this will help or not)

That is pretty much all I have been able to do so far. I do not hear any noises or anything coming from the maker at all. I don't want to condemn the ice maker yet, especially if it may be something else. Any ideas?

Thanks!

I have the exact Whirlpool refrigerator and am having the same problem with the ice maker. What is happening is that the water tube that feeds into the ice tray gets frozen shut. To fix it, first remove the ice cube container, next turn the ice maker switch to off, then remove the 4 screws that hold the cover on, then gently pull the cover partially off (there will be some wires that are connected, so be careful). Then blow a hair dryer on high heat into the black water tube until the ice melts (you will not see the ice chunk since it is up inside the black tube). Re assemble the ice maker and turn back on. It may take a couple of hours for the ice maker to cycle through before it starts filling the ice cube tray again. This has happened multiple times to my ice maker. I will be contacting Whirlpool about this issue.

I have the same unit and same problem, worst refrigerator I have owned. Had a Samsung and the ice maker never had a problem for 14 years running. This Whirpool from day one dropped once onto the floor randomly all day, ice in the bid forms a big frozen ball every other month and requires it to be emptied not the ice machine stopped working. Unit only 15 months old! Sad shoddy product hope they go out of business.

i bought 4 of these for my rentals, and so far 3 have had the freezer doors replaced under warranty. now the 4th quit, and i'm 1 year past warranty. the water tube heating element is embedded in the foam in the door. so unless you cut the plastic and foam, you have to replace the door, which costs around $1000 just to buy the door. this is obviously a serious design flaw, and whirlpool has no other fix. not happy.

I’ve had the same issue with this model off & on since purchase in Oct/2018 and the unit was replaced while under warranty. Problem continues. Tried the hair dryer suggestion and it worked….I could see the ice formation at the base of the black water tube.

This is an obvious design defect and I’m going to write Whirlpool to see if there’s any response.

Good luck with that. I have same exact issue, bought mine November 2018. Out of warranty so it's a service call with up front charge then parts and labor. I haven't tried hair dryer method yet but will be doing that to hopefully get it working again.

From what I remember, you only see a small amount of water exit the tube. Two or three minutes with the hair dryer should be plenty of time, then hook everything back together and see if it works. I have been lucky in that my ice maker has not frozen up again for awhile, but I have been using quite a bit of ice during the summer months. I think the secret may be to keep the ice maker making ice.

How long should you use the hair dryer. I seen a few small dreams come down but not much…

I definitely wouldn’t use a hair dryer, if it’s going to be a constant problem and a simple fix to thaw the ice in the tube get a small steamer, that won’t melt or warp the plastic. Not sure it’s worth spending $1000 to replace the door due to poor engineering when you can just thaw it every now and then. I have been repairing appliances for 12 years, the small steamer is definitely the way to go and very quick.

What kind of steamer do you use?

I have the same problem on a 3.5 year old side by side model. Can I just take out the bin and use a steamer in the ice compartment? What steamer do you use?
