Fridge and freezer not cold enough

I have a GE PFSS9PKYASS French door fridge with the freezer on the bottom and both freezer and fridge are not maintaining a cold temperature. I took off the panel in the back and cleaned the coil with a brush and vacuum. I'm currently at 39 degrees on the freezer and 68 on the fridge. Any idea what the prob could be?

Hi @danec ,

Your refrigerator has two evaporator units to cool down the compartments. One for the freezer section and one for the refrigerator section.

Since both compartments are too warm, then it must be a problem common to both.

Is the compressor motor running continually trying to cool down the refrigerator?

Are there any oily residues on the condenser coils (the ones you cleaned) or on or below the compressor?

Do the condenser coils feel warm to the touch?

Is there any ice buildup on the pipes leading to the compressor?

All these questions are just trying to find out if there is a problem with the sealed system i.e. compressor, evaporator units, condenser coils, piping etc.

If the compressor is running continually then there may be a problem with the compressor or perhaps a lack of refrigerant (that’s why the check for the oily residue), and the condenser feeling warm (it should be). The ice build up on the pipes (if any there - shouldn’t be) may be due to a blockage in the sealed system.

You would need to get the sealed system checked by a licenced refrigerator repair service so as to comply with the environmental laws regarding the handling of refrigerant gases.

How old is the refrigerator? Some manufacturers give a 5 year warranty on the sealed system while the rest of the refrigerator is only 12 months. This does not include the labour cost but it may be worthwhile checking your warranty to see if it applies to you, if the problem is the compressor or inn the sealed system.

If the compressor is not running continually it may be an electrical problem e.g. faulty control board.

Was there a power outage or storm just before this problem occurred?

Can you hear if the evaporator fans in each compartment is running? The fans will stop if a door is opened and start again when the door is closed. You may have to place your ear next to the fridge to hear them. The evaporator fans will run as long as the compressor is running and the doors are shut. Do not confuse these fans with the condenser fan which is outside the compartments and can run regardless of the doors being open or not.

There are defrost thermostats and temperature sensors for each compartment but it would be unusual for them all to go faulty at the same time. One compartment not getting cool would be understandable if one of these were faulty, not both.

Hopefully a start.

Thank you for the reply so the fridge is about 10 years old I had a tech come by to look at it today The compressor is cold, the evaporator fans are turning on and the compressor fan is on. The tech thinks it's either the compressor or the inverter on the board when he checked the compressor there was no power going to it. I had this problem 2 weeks ago when I originally posted it but it started working on its own after 2 days the fridge and the freezer were able to maintain a temperature for a little over a week and then now it happened again yesterday so the tech recommended I call GE customer service to come and look at it.

So I just wanted to give an update I contacted general electric and had them come and check it The servicemen said he could not determine exactly what's wrong he thinks it's either the main board in the back or the inverter board or possibly even the control panel for the temperature which is by the ice dispenser The two boards in the back which is the main board and inverter would cost me about a thousand installed his recommendation was not to do it cuz he's not 100% sure and I would be stuck with the cost of the boards so unfortunately I have to throw out my refrigerator and just play it safe and buy a new one. Also the fridge continues to work for like 3 days and then doesn't work for a day or two and then cycles back to working and it just keeps going in that cycle

@danec ,

Thanks for the feedback.

If you want to keep the fridge as a "garage fridge" then a possibly lower cost option to consider might be if you search online for the boards or control panel (maybe one at a time) on places such as Ebay, Craig's list etc, using the "board number" or part number and see if you can pick one up cheaper or at least at a price that you're prepared to gamble with it being not the one that is the problem. Given the age of the fridge there may be some boards out there, maybe not the control panel though

Just a thought

I noticed a number of capacitors on that board, could a bad capacitor be the cause? If so, replacement of a capacitor should be pretty easy and cheap to fix I am having similar issue, but its just the freezer compartment. Had a tech out (Not A GE Tech), he said seal system leak, but he didn't check for leaks or offer up any explanation for the diagnosis. The freezer temp control initially indicated that the actual temp in freezer was the setpoint temp. Seemed like a bad temp element to me, but no error code for that came up. Now the freezer temperature is flashing, but I haven't found that in the service manual.
