Home button stopped working completely after battery replacement

I replaced my battery yesterday with the IFixit kit. The screen and the button are the same as before (ie. original Apple kit).

The iPhone glue was softened and opened up with the ‘hairdryer’ method to release the screen glue.

At the same time I replaced the Haptic engine, as mine had stopped working.

Spudger used was used carefully (ie no apparent damage to any ribbon cables inside) and the iphone was put pat together again without problem.

After powering it on, the new battery and new taptic engine…

screen, camera, speaker are all functioning without issues.

HOWEVER, I got the TOUCH ID: Unable to activate Touch ID on this iPhone. message.

The Home button is not working at all and is disabled. I have tried a soft reset as well as a ‘Reset all Settings’ option, however it’s not working.

I’ve opened the phone back up again to re-seat the top right ribbon cable as well as the two lower ones on the right hand side and to visually check for any tears or damage.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Is a complete reset and restore likely to solve this issue or am I left with a virtual brick now?

What can I do? I don’t understand why this is happening.

thank you.

Edit: 9/4/20

ive checked the ribbon cable… i can’t see any obvious tears per say, but it looks like the cable inside the back of the screen may have had a previous repair (not by me) or at least there are remains of some glue and some patch? Is this normal?

the shorter ribbon cable from the screen to the body seems to have a little tear on the left hand side below the connector?! I cant tell?! Is this significant enough to cause it to fail? Would a a complete system reset/rebuild help?

Might help to check the connection or better still, inspect the entire home button under a magnifying glass or similar. I was able to stumble across an older, similar post on here with a solution:

Home button stopped working after replacing taptic engine

hmmm.. ive had the whole thing apart like 3 times now to re-seat and re-check. even put the old taptic engine back in, home button still doesn’t work (and the old taptic engine is dead).

I put the new taptic engine in, this then works, but still no function from the home button at all??
