Loose screen hinges, broken fn key & apple care visit in near future.

I am second owner of this device and I am not sure about its past. Previous owner told me that device is alright and nothing bad have not happened to it.

I have not found any marks or other things. I have just found a small mark of liquid in the Bottom case in fan place but insides of laptop are normal, nothing abnormal there (Bottom liquid markers are white but I cannot remove the motherboard - I do not have proper screwdriver). I was trying to remove motherboard to see other liquid markers to be sure that device is fine (it works fine) but I am not able to do this.

And on top of that my fn keys is broken. I have mastered the technique of removing butterfly keycaps without destroying them and it is something else - Bottom portion of key cannot lift up, top portion is working correctly. Key is working but keycap is not straight.

All other keys are fine, computer is in very good shape and it is working flawlessly (thermal paste needs to be replaced). So I am planning that after this pandemic I will go to my nearest iSpot to try replace keyboard with replacement program.

But on top of that, what is procedure of “fixing” hinges in this models? Is there a way to tight them or I would have to replace whole display? Does Apple Care provide option to fix hinges and for example replace thermal paste?

AppleCare is the warranty program which depending on your country is either one or two years from purchase. It doesn’t matter if you are the original owner or not. AppleCare+ is the support contract you can pay extra for this adds two years of support. It does not offer a full blanket, some conditions may require you to pay an additional fee to cover half the cost of the needed part due to being dropped or lightning/surge damage of the logic board.

Apple won’t refresh thermal paste at all. They only replace the logic board if there is a need.

As far as your hinge issue there is a set of screws on each side of the uppercase. We don’t have a Fn key guide but the regular Touch Bar model uses the same display and hinge system. Here’s that guide Reemplazo del ensamblaje de pantalla MacBook 13" con Barra Táctil de finales 2016 Jump down to Step 16 to see whats needed to get to the screws. If these screws are tight the display assembly will need to be replaced. Apple was replacing them under an unpublished extended warranty program as the hinge pin was defective a good number of 2016 systems.

Frankly, I wouldn’t do anything to the system at all. Focus on the keyboard issues so that is fixed under the extended warranty program they have. They should fix the display issue as well. You see they don’t replace the keyboard, they replace the full uppercase assembly! And during the process they will see the issue and will replace the display as well.

When you pick up the system only then check it and if its not fixed tell them its not right and have them fix it again., I doubt you’ll need to though!

So I have just gave my macbook to service from 3rd party which is Apple Reseller and they have been recommended to me by Apple when I have called service line. So for now as I was talking with them and they have said that there is no such program etc. So I am currently waiting for my machine to get into their service. If this hinge thing will be not adressed so my next step is to replace whole display assembly?

The hinge issue should still be covered under AppleCare warranty as well. As long as the systems manufacture date is less than the Apple warranty period, which is either one or two years depending on your country. Did you check the screws in the uppercase to see if they where tight? If they are you'll need a new display assembly!

You'll want to go to a real Apple Store instead at this point.
