Best purchasing config to upgrade SSD in 2019 iMac?

Hello. After several years using my MBP mid 2012 is time to renew and I was thinking to get an iMac 2019 5k 27” 3Ghz.

My idea is to buy the cheapest option and upgrade to save money but I’d like to do it good.

I know I can upgrade the RAM myself and I’d like to know if there is any specific brand which works better with Apple and where could I get it.

If I buy the cheapest config it will come with 8GB so I think 2x8Gb more will be enough for me as the 3 together will be 24GB.

About the SSD, I want to avoid any Fusion drive config. Here I have two scenarios:

A) The cheapest option then 1TB Fusion Drive: with the idea to get rid fusion dive and upgrade the SSD with at least 512GB and then use the 1TB HDD as extra capacity to keep pictures and more data.

B) Go for a SSD config: in that case, Could I choose the cheapest option and then buy and upgrade with other bigger? Always the idea is to save money as 512GB-1TB SSD is really expensive if you buy directly to Apple.

In this scenery, Apple uses SATA with their SSD? To know what is the best way to take advantage of the system or the advice if my budget is around 2.500 euros.

Thanks

DON’T DO IT unless you can do the repair without damaging the display. These aren’t easy to work on like the old ones.

Order it with what you want HD/SSD wise - you can skimp on RAM since it’s easy. As far as brands go, I usually like Crucial or Corsair - get memory that is validated for Macs since they can be quite picky.

Hello Nick, thanks a lot for your fast answer. To be honest I was not thinking to do it myself but looking some Apple technical support in Madrid (Spain).

Buy one with the CPU and drive configuration you want and skimp on RAM - most AASPs won't do upgrades.

Ok, thanks.

One thing more. What bus interface are using the SSD in this iMac?

I guess they are not using SATA as it will get a bottleneck, right?

Thanks again

@jorgean SATA for the mass storage/PCIe NVMe for the fusion drive SSD.

And if I finally go with the idea to buy the iMac with SSD config, that ssd is coming also with NVMe PCIe right? not just the option with fusion drive SSD. Thanks
