Wifi hardware failure--can it be repaired?

My daughter’s Mac is just 6 years old; the IT dept. at her school has diagnosed that there is a wifi hardware failure; go buy a new computer.

I don’t know the internal architecture of the machine but is the wifi adapter something that can be replaced/repaired? She’s taken reasonably good care of it, otherwise it’s fine and holds all her school work, revisions, exam prep. So, can anyone tell me, if it can be fixed?
