Stripped P5 Pentalobe on bottom help

Block Image

Basically i’ve been given this 2015 macbook to repair (display issue) but i’ve hit a stumble at stage one. The P5 Pentalobe screw (the 1.8mm one on the right) is stripped and I cant get any purchase on it.

I’ve tried supergluing and using a rubber band, just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue or has any tricks on getting it out (ideally without drilling). As you can see theres still a bit of shape but no where near enough theres just no friction.

Fingers crossed thanks for your help

Put your Pentalobe screw driver in and tap it with a jewelers hammer. I sometimes use a driver with a larger diameter handle to create more toque.

Try different sized flathead screwdrivers. Also try pulling up on the component being held down slightly as you turn it, this can hopefully help move it around a bit more and give it something to push back

I have the same issue! My P5 also stripped when fixing a watch band (watch band pictured with part of the bit still in it) Had to get a macro lens for my iPhone to even see the damage on it. I’m concerned by the quality of the other bits now - I’ve not used this specific bit for anything else, and it seems all the chrome stripped off and the underlying metal is all twisted out of shape. Cannot use it for anything now - seems like a serious problem!

That must be a cheap driver then,.. a quality tool shouldn't twist like that. If you have a lot of these screws I would recommend a driver from Wera or Wiha, they are of outstanding quality and provide a (limited) lifetime warranty!

This was the iFixit Essential Electronics Toolkit... It says they don't provide support but to post issues in the Answers section, so hopefully someone here sees it!

@B T Ah well, I also own a iFixit toolkit (old model) and the bits are okish, but you can't compare it to a dedicated screwdriver that costs ~10€ just for one bit ;-) that aside, iFixit has lifetime warranty, email them! I also had bits replaced by them for free. Contact info can be found here https://help.ifixit.com/article/136-emai... (support@ifixit.com) they will provide support since you have a faulty product from them, iFixit is not here to assist with device questions like above.
