What to upgrade both the storage & RAM

@danj hey dan,

So I want to buy mid-2010 white unibody MacBook and I want to upgrade it a lot.

So I mainly want to upgrade to SSD and I wanna upgrade my RAM, I don’t even know if anything else is upgradable.

So my first question is, for a 2010 MacBook, can I upgrade the Core 2 Duo an Core i7 chip? And is it possible to upgrade the graphics card?

Also, I want to get an optical drive adapter aka a data doubler so I can have 2 SSD’s. So my next questions are, to upgrade the HDD to an SSD in a white 2010 MacBook, do I need to change the SATA cable to a newer one? And for the optical drive adapter SSD, do I also need a newer SATA cable?

So what I want to do is either run raid SSD’s or have one 4 TB Samsung 860 EVO specifically for macOS and I’ll have another 2 TB SSD for Windows.

Is 6 TB of total storage possible for a 2010 white unibody MacBook? If it’s not, would I be better getting a 2010 MacBook with intel core i7 already in it to fit 6 terabytes of SSD storage.

Also do you know how to run windows and Mac on a separate SSD? I think it’s possible but I’m not sure how to do it.

I’d be interested in commissioning you for some work and more advice. I’m located in Los Angeles, California.

Sticking a 1500$ worth storage in a 200$ 10 years old entry level Macbook is really beyond my understanding..

Sometimes it just doesn’t pay :-{ I hate being a Debby Downer!

First the CPU & GPU is what it is, you can’t upgrade either.

While you could swap out the HD for a SSD (any size) the systems SATA I/O is limited to SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) so while a SSD will work I’m not sure if you want to make the heavy investment in the 4 TB SSD. I would just stick with a 1 TB or smaller (that’s what I would spend on this system).

Remember this system is also limited to what OS it can support while it can support macOS High Sierra (10.13.x) I really recommend you stick with macOS Sierra (10.12.x) as being better. RAM can be pushed to 16 GB which is a good thing! But, the limits of the systems age and CPU performance needs to be balanced here again. I would recommend just going with 8 GB.

The right system!

Considering how much you where thinking at throwing at this system I think you are better served with a used 2012 13” MacBook Pro! Here we have the better CPU (Core i7) it can support 16 GB of RAM without any hardship. You can load up both SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) ports with your massive SSD’s! You also get USB3 & Thunderbolt ports (the Macbook only has two USB2 ports).
