Computer shutting down fully instead of going to sleep

Hello. I have recently acquired a White Unibody MacBook (Mid 2010, 2.4 GHz, MN A1342) that came with a replacement third party battery in serious need of a proper calibration. The issue I am having is, when the battery gets very low, the computer shuts down completely rather than just going to sleep, which has resulted in data loss in a few cases. I have reset the SMC twice and have followed numerous sets of steps to calibrate the battery. I am supposedly required to allow the MacBook to drain battery while using it until it automatically goes to sleep, and then allow the computer to sleep for a few hours, but being that it shuts down instead, this hinders that process.

Hopefully someone has an idea to why this is happening. I’ve had similar issues with a now defunct MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid-2009) that had a worn battery, if that helps.

Thanks.

Well you do have a few issues here. The first is this series batteries don’t hold up very well. Here’s a bit more Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks as we can see the battery only lasts 300 cycles. So you will first need to see if the battery you do have still has enough life in it. I find this app CoconutBattery offers a good view all of the data you need to determine the batteries health. Now we do have an issue as the newer versions won’t run on the older version of OS-X this system came with, if you haven’t yet upgraded to at least macOS 10.12.x Sierra.

To calibrate your battery follow this guide: Calibrate & Maintain Your Macbook Battery for Best Performance

The trick in any MacBook or MacBook Pro is not to let the battery run too low as that’s how you lose a cycle count. Try to use the system off of AC as much as you can and try not to run heavy apps which run your battery down quickly when on battery.

Thanks. I have CoconutBattery. The computer is running the latest compatible version, which is 10.13 High Sierra. The battery replacement is brand new and only has 4 charge cycles as of this posting, and I am aware of the general 300 cycle limit.

I'm just still wondering why the computer tends to shut down completely rather than sleep when the battery becomes unusably low. I'm not sure if that's typical or not.

Resetting the SMC as outlined in the guide I pointed to should reset the low and high water marks held within SMC.

The system is designed to go into sleep mode and depending on the state of the battery it might also shutdown as well making sure your data is not lost. Putting Your Mac in Sleep Mode
