My Mac has #flexgate and Apple said this! What should I do?

I just went to Apple service centre to discuss about my mac’s display replacement cost estimate and other options. Prerequisites: my mac’s display suffer from #flexgate. So I asked which new display assembly unit are they gonna use to replace my mac’s faulty display and they answered: we will use the same display of 2017 model compatible with your Mac and it will have 90 days warranty. Then I said: what’s the point in getting 90 days warranty if when I purchased my Mac, my default mac’s display lasted about 1.5 years and obviously the #flexgate issue won’t happen in next 90 days if I repair my Mac. So, the repair agent agreed to this. But, now I was surfing ifixit parts section and stumbled upon this link: MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Late 2016-2017) Display Assembly

The item in this link says compatibility of the unit with models till 2019. So, does that mean I can use 2018 model MacBook Pro display assembly to replace my mac’s display assembly taking into consideration that ifixit’s research showed that 2018 models have 2 mm longer flex cable to prevent #flexgate issue ?

my MacBook Pro has not yet shown this issue, but it is just a matter of time before the issue pops out.

Can I use this reason to change the display module under the Apple repair service program or will it get rejected since they are not able to replicate the issue?

Lets back up here…

You have a 2017 model which requires a 2016/2017 display!

iFixit store is in error! There is a very big difference between the 2016/2017 display and the 2018/2019 display. They have been notified and are working on making the correction.

The FlexGate issue is a length issue within the backlight ribbon cable. While Apple did address the issue in the newer models they have also corrected it in the replacement parts as well! So letting Apple fix your system you will get the newer cable as the part was updated.

So if you haven’t already approved the repair, let Apple fix your system.

For reference here’s the correct part per system:

  • 2016/17 MacBook Pro 13" Display P/N 661-07971
  • 2018/19 MacBook Pro 13" Display P/N 661-10037

Since I am near to 5 years from the first retail sale

@Daripally Varun - Sorry Apple will only do the repair when you have the issue.
