Why is the fridge warm and freezer cold but not frozen

I have a Kenmore Elite model 795.72483.410 refrigerator. First noticed problem of ice melting in ice bin. Then notice ice cream melting but everything else frozen. Top part of fridge was 55 degrees and freezer 24 degrees. Found the evaporator fan moto for ice bin not working. Replaced it but still same problem with unit not getting to set temperature.

Hi,

Is the compressor running and is the evaporator unit (inside the freezer compartment behind a panel) getting icy cold?

Are the condenser coils warm?

Can you hear the evap fan running?

You'll need to listen with near against the fridge as the fan will stop if a door is open.

Yes, the compressor and condenser fan are both running. The compressor is slightly warm to the touch. The condenser coils are clean and slightly warm as well. This unit has 3 evaporator fans. I think they are all running. I replaced the one in the freezer section that blows cold air through the ducts to the ice maker, however I'm not sure it's still running since I'm not able to feel air when I open the door and feel around the grommets. I will be taking it down once again to check the motors. I wish I could check them in place on the fridge. Is there a way to fool the fridge in a way to run with the door open? I think the switch is magnetic on this unit. There is no visible switch. Thanks for the reply.

Hi,

Here's a link to the parts for your model, which may help to find the door switch locations.

Scroll down the diagrams to find the "case parts" diagram and then look for Case parts #402A and #406B.

If you click on the "case parts" diagram, left of page and then find the part numbers it may help to localize the area of the switch and then you can use a magnet to operate it. The light should go off in the fridge etc when the switch is operated and the fans should start up.

Thanks. This will make it easier to diagnose it further.

I removed the evaporator cover in the fridge. The fan motor is running, however to my dismay the evaporator was slightly cool with no frost. It did have a little mositure on it. Want to check the thermistor however the temperature resistance data sheet is nowhere to be found. There are other information on the ice maker and compressor but nothing else. What should the ohm resistance be at room temperature and near freezing? I want to check temperature control devices but have no data information.

After running awhile the evaporator begin to frost over. The temperature t the coil was around 20 degrees. However the defrost coil was 32 degrees. Is it possible it's short circling on defrost and if so what sensor would make it thing it needs defrosting?

This could be a long list of things failing. Watch this video to see if it will help narrow things down:
