Accidentally knocked off capacitors - which replacements do I need?

Hi everyone,

I was trying to fix a MacBook Pro 13” Mid-2014 Retina. While using a spudger to push the display cable back in I slipped - and seemingly knocked off a couple of tiny capacitors. I also scratched one of the other elements close by. I checked with a picture from ifixit and as far as I can see, there are two elements missing:

Now I don’t know which parts they are to order and replace, or what they actually do. Can anyone help me out?

The current issues of this MacBook Pro (even though they might not be the direct result of the damage I did as described above):

  • MBP will start, but I can’t see anything on the display
  • When I connect a secondary monitor via HDMI, I can after some time see a grey background and move the mouse. From how I can move the mouse, it seems to extend the internal display (I can move the pointer into a non-visible space)
  • PRAM-Reset cannot be done with internal keyboard (even though I just replaced it…)

I would appreciate help concerning:

  • fixing the capacitor-damage
  • hints on fixing the (other?) problems

Thank you for any help!

Make sure the solder leftovers of the 2 missing capacitors are not bridging ground and circuits creating a short. The picture isn’t very clear thus it doesn’t show whats the actual condition. If there’s no bridging, we just talk about C8354 on backlight dimming circuit and C8302 on PP5VR3V3_SW_LCD, none of the 2 is critical and should not be responsible for your other issues.

If you have troubles on HDMI too, either you have a HDMI circuit issue to add to the list or worse a problem at graphical circuitry. On top of that, you report troubles in resetting PRAM after changing keyboard that adds a chance you have problems with SMC or related too.

It seems you have a bit of a messy board there (liquid damage?) that requires a number of component level troubleshooting and repairs, not something you can fix by replacing parts. Either you find and replace the logic board with a good one or you’ll need someone with deeper skills to get that Mac fixed.

Thank you for taking the time to reply!

You are right, I bought the MBP from someone with liquid damage. I tried to connect a new keyboard which worked fine at first. I then did some more repairs (localized top-case + new keyboard, touchpad...) and suddenly I got those graphic issues. Most of the time the display stayed blank, but sometimes a picture came back (Apple Logo). I assumed that the only thing that had been broken from the beginning was the keyboard and something I did caused the graphic errors. Since I had been moving the screen to test for loose connections, I thought it might be the display flex cable, which I then ordered and replaced, but it didn't fix the problem.

HDMI works insofar as it shows a grey background image with a mouse pointer.

I was able to do PRAM and SMC Resets with an external keyboard (USB), but the new internal keyboard didn't work. There might be something wrong with the keyboard connector on the logic board.

You might be right about someone with better skills. I'll look.

@thekryz Liquid damage is usually very complex to repair, just like trying to make a sense of direction in a labyrinth. Liquids touch here and there random components in different circuits without a logic and have the bad habit to start oxidizing of components that continues on its own in a planet where oxygen is everywhere in the air. Unless one can secure the board with ultrasonic washing and taking care of bad components/circuits, board selfdestruction is a work in progress 24/7.
