Why is it safe to connect the LCD "live"?

I've learned the hard way that, no matter what device you work with, you should disconnect the battery (and the charger) before (dis)connecting a LCD! I've had many LCD's or backlight components dying because I broke this rule.

How come it's not necessary with the iPad Air?

Hi @faloude ,

Where did you come across this information?

Step.35 in the ifixit Reemplazo del LCD en iPad Air LTE guide says to isolate the battery before disconnecting the LCD when going to remove it.

Presumably when you go to replace the LCD, the isolation pick is still in place.

Ah I didn't consult that guide. I encountered several other guides (articles across the web and youtube) from people not disconnecting the battery before replacing the LCD.

For any electronics it’s a general rule to always disconnect power sources from it.

I’ve had iPads come in with blown backlight circuits (filter usually) on the iPad Air 1 that were caused by unplugging / plugging the screen when the battery was still connected to the logic board. To disconnect power use a thin flexible plastic card always between the battery connector on one terminal.

Well then consider me warned. How come LCD's are so much more sensitive to this than for example a SATA HDD?

Because there is in most cases backlight power that is still coming from the laptop to the screen even when the device is turned off.

The only way to turn off that backlight power most of the time is to disconnect the battery.

Hard drives on the other hand they are actually completely unpowered when the computer is switched off so it's safe to unplug hard drives with battery still connected. Removable batteries I just disconnect them anyway.

Hi @faloude ,

As told to me 50+ years ago when learning about electronics during my apprenticeship, when doing repairs to electronic equipment, power OFF first, power ON last, every time unless you need power connected to conduct tests. Nothing has changed if you want to safeguard the equipment when doing repairs

Obviously it is harder now that they make you nearly completely dis-assemble devices just to get to the battery to be able to disconnect it and that the Power switch is no longer a power isolating switch but rather just a switch that brings the device out of a dormant state, meaning that there is still power connected to some of the device's circuits while you're dis-assembling until you can access the battery
