After a screen replacement.. A very thin black line on the left

Hello Ifixit community! Pleasure to ask a first question in the forum. Yesterday, I attempted my first self screen replacement ever, with a screen (without the metal shield) I ordered from Repair Union, a popular Chinese company that sells phone parts. The Iphone XR I had was bought from Ebay, and it worked with no problem, except for a cracked screen. So, I attempted to replace the screen, following the Ifixit guide. When I was done with everything but closing the screen, I made sure the touch worked by dragging an app everywhere on the screen. I don’t know if this line was there then, but my guess would be if it wasn’t there, I think I would have known. Anyways, I went ahead and closed the phone tight. And I think this is when I applied a glass screen protector.

When I turned on the phone, I found white pressure spots on the right corner area of the phone. At this time, I’m not sure if the line was here or not. But if it was, I would have thought the line was an edge of the screen protector.

Anyway, I was busy researching online why these spots were here, snd after several attempts of repair, and by finally re-installing the metal shield, I could fix the screen like a magic. I was so happy.

After that, I thought all was good, still thinking the line was an edge of my glass screen protector.

After awhile, I was annoyed by this line. I believed it was because of the screen protector, but I didn’t want to take it off, because I felt bad about wasting it. But after some consideration, I decided to take it off to enjoy the smooth and raw original screen. When I took the screen protector, the line remained. At first, I thought taking off the screen protector damaged the screen. But later I found that the screen protector was actually big enough to cover the full lighted screen.

So here I am, with an almost perfect brand-new original screen, with a very thine black line by the left bezel. Since I was so excited about getting a new screen and using this phone, and watched more than fifty videos preparing to attempt self-repair for the time, I am disappointed. So I am here wondering if anyone who is more experienced than I am could give me advice to let me know anything that can enlighten me.

I’m wondering, if this can be a result of flex cable damage. I did put pressure on the flex cables, as I tried to get rid of glues on the back of the flex cables for the LCD and digitizer.

Or, could it be something else, such as, dirty connectors?

I did try reinstalling the LCD and digitizer, but no luck.

I don’t understand why, and how, a single, very thin line can appear like this. Could you let me know all the possibilities?

I’m desperately wanting to hear any possible solutions.

I know it’s not a big issue, but the line still bothers me, since the screen was said to be brand-new original. And the hard part is that I don’t remember if the line was there at first, which makes it hard for me to know if this screen came with the line from the beginning. Please help! Thank you.

+By the way, I used a cutter knife the open the screen. And I noticed that because of doing that multiple times, I scratched off a bit the bottom of the back of the screen’s display cable. It reveals bits of gold-yellow metal. Could this be the reason?

+ Also, i broke the small bracket (picture) attached to the logic board connector bracket. Could this be the reason for the line?

Your problem is that you ordered a screen from China instead of a reputable supplier of DIY parts like iFixit.[br]

[br]

Seriously—you use iFixit’s guide to install the screen. You are using iFixit’s forum to ask questions—-both of those things require money to develop and maintain. You know that iFixit pays for these things by selling screens—-so you take your money and give it to Union Repair?[br]

[br]

That’s really not cool, and you reap what you sow. You either damaged the screen or it was defective.[br]

If you had bought it from iFixit, you might get a replacement since they are DIY friendly. Union Repair will not replace that screen—so live with it or buy one from iFixit like you should have to begin with.[br]

That's very rude and mean of you to leave a response like that here. I didn't ask for your preaching.

@jessabethany This is suppose to be a community where we help others. While I agree that @bkimchi could have purchased parts from iFixit, your response was not needed nor appropriate.

There are many vendors for parts and not every vendor has parts in stock at all times. A few things to consider...

Was the part available when he was looking for it? Did he know that iFixit existed before he attempted his repair? Maybe he just did a search for a guide and iFixit came up. Where there budget constraints? iFixit's parts are not always the cheapest. Maybe he didn't want or was able to put the money into the device.

Please remember that this is a community where we help others, not put them down. Negative comments have no place here.

Solución Elegida

After looking at the pictures above, I have two thoughts. Either pressure was applied in the wrong spot and this caused a small crack in the LCD. This usually results in white or pink lines however. It’s also possible that this was a defect in the screen manufacturing or there was just a random line of dead pixels.
