Clicking and static noise in background of recording a video.

Hello so I’ve had my iPhone 7 for about a year now and I’ve realized recently that when I use the front facing camera to record a video there is a clicking noise + static noise that is in the background or that messes up the audio from the actual video. When I screen record I don’t hear it. It also plays when I use the rear camera as well. I don’t know what this could possibly be because I’ve used both cameras early on and didn’t experience this.

Unfortunately sound issues and iPhone 7 are often associated and usually lead to a board repair needed. It’s a typical problem in the series that shows up after the phone suffers occasional drops or some case bending and requires the work of a microsolderer to get fixed. You may take the risk and try replacing the front Camera flex assembly and power/volume cable including both recording microphones, but be aware it might easily turn out being useless.

SIMPLE FIX!!! I had been having this issue on my iPhone 6s for years (yes i still have an iPhone 6, don’t judge me!)— a clicking/buzzing sound that is extremely apparent when recording videos, but not when recording voice memos. i have finally fixed the issue, leaving this answer here in case it can help anyone else. i would imagine this could help with newer models as well, although microphone placement might be in different places.

i learned that there are 3 mics on the iPhone that are used for different things. when recording videos using the front-facing camera, the mic inside the earpiece speaker is what’s used (the long thin thing next to the front camera). clean that really gently with a clean toothbrush and/or very carefully poke some holes through it with a pin if there is dirt clogging it. do the same to the other mics if you want, located at the bottom of the iPhone and on the back next to the rear camera.

that’s it! no more annoying clicking sound when recording videos. i couldn’t believe it was that simple.

other people can also hear my voice much clearer when i put them on speaker phone during calls.

Thank you much Corinne! I was really bummed today that I was not able to shoot a yoga video with my iPhone 7 because of the crummy extra sounds. My electric toothbrush cleaned up the mic and bingo I am back in business!!! Thanks so much!

This helped me figure out why my memoji messages had a clicking sound - i had put on a screen protector that covered up the mic :)

If you press the back of the phone against your ear, do you hear a hissing noice? similar to the one you are experiencing while recording? that might be the issue. many smartphones emit a weak hissing noice from within, but is is significant on some models. otherwise, do a test recording with a new front camera flex plugged in. many smartphone repair shops will test this for you for free.

If that cases on iPhone 7 that might be the fault of audio ic because that problem is chronic problem in 7 series iPhone Because mic recording function is also related to that issues.

I just got a new iPhone 8 yesterday and when I took a video today and played it back there is a clicking sound like an old movie. Can’t be a dirty mic or speaker, so what’s the problem??

I also face the same issue with my iPhone 7 plus then after read a forum on Apple website, I found that the problem is because I still use the screen protector that covered the entire screen, including the camera and speaker/microphone beside it. I’ve tried record a video with front camera after remove the screen protector and it recorded well with no noise.

My granddaughter inherited my old phone and shortly after, she started experiencing sound issues when recording videos. It turns out she had placed a screen protector on it that was muffling her voice and creating a thumping noise. We removed the screen protector and resolved the issue.

As crazy as this sounds … I had turned on my ringer working from home and made a quick video of my puppy and when I watched it, there was about 3 seconds of static then a pop, then the sound was fine. After lots of research and experimenting, I realized that when I turned the ringer off and recorded, it was gone. Thought I’d add this just in case it is as simple as that for any of you …
