How many beeps--also what are the last three digits of your serial number?

I hear first the superdrive loading, then 3 fast beeps, 3 paused beeps and 3 fast beeps

Apple iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06 24-Inch (Early 2008) Specs

Identifiers: Early 2008 - MB398LL/A - iMac8,1 - A1225 - 2211

This is a RAM problem. Please remove both sticks. Install one stick in the upper slot and start. If all is well, remove it and put in the lower slot and start. Repeat with the other stick. This will test both the RAM and the slots. Everything may work just fine and all that was needed was to reseat. Please let us know your results. Thanks

You may have a bad slot. Following directions will uncover this. Wait of the hard drive till you have this problem solved.

Generally speaking, 3 beeps indicates that there are no good banks of memory. This could be due to disconnect, faulty modules, or a faulty logic board. Best case scenario is that you pull and reseat the memory, and it works fine. Next test each memory stick individually. If that doesn't work try and get your hands on a set of knowing working memory and test again. If that doesn't work, you need a new logic board.

EDIT: I should have been more specific, the 3 beeps mean that there is no good RAM installed currently.

You have a RAM problem, so why are you messing with the hard drive?

On all Intel Macs there is no need for a firewire external - USB works as well for booting. You can use any case that accepts a 3.5" SATA drive. Anyway, i don't understand the discussion, because if the computer has a problem with the RAM slots there is no point booting it externally. Is there something i aint getting?
