Not charging but shows charging icon (dock and batterie replaced!)

I have a iPhone 5 which do the following:

  • If I remove the battery and charge it outside the iphone, the iphone is working but is getting VERY hot during usage and often shows a “overheating“ warning (it takes 1-2 hours until the battery is empty I would say)
  • If the battery in the device is empty and I put a USB wire into the device it show a apple logo, shuts down, shows an apple logo, shuts down … repeat that
  • If I charge the battery outside the device and put it back, add an USB wire, the iphone is showing a flash mentioned its charging, but thats not the case. The % drops quickly and the device is very hot and shuts down
  • On the logic board above the SIM card is a place which is covered by a metall shield this place is the one which becomes very hot
  • putting the device into airplane mode didn´t help to cool it down
  • I already replaced the dock and battery via ifixit replacements but that didn´t solved the issue
  • I tried multiple USB wires already

Any ideas?

Do you have a charger amp tester to see how many amps its pulling

Were you having overheating issues with the last battery as well?

@rockclimber02

Yes I have the issue with the old Battery, the new one and a replacement one from another iPhone 5

@berndw since “the iphone is showing a flash mentioned its charging, but thats not the case. The % drops quickly and the device is very hot and shuts down” I would consider this “fake” charging. Since you already changed the battery and the Lightning connector, looking at the schematic I would focus on checking

1. Q2

2. U2

Block Image

The area right above the Sim card is the A6 processor and U2 which is a PMIC and USB Control IC CBTL1608A .

We would need to see exactly where your phone is heating up. Post some images of your board. Agregar imágenes a una pregunta existente This sure sounds like a job for experienced microsolder experts like @refectio and/or @arbaman

I would say the heat comes from the A6 chip (which is covered under a metal plate). It got so hot that I can burn my finger here. If I install a loaded battery from another iPhone 5 and install everything the iPhone got so hot, that it shows a warning and will shutdown automatically.

Hi @berndw

When you install a new battery, does the heat come from the top of the phone? You might have a failed WiFi Chip with a major short. You can confirm this by installing a charged battery and checking your WiFi connection to see if it has been “greyed out”.

It is possible to replace this chip, but the cost and process involved is probably not worth it for this model of iPhone.

When I charge the iPhone 5 battery in a working iPhone and then replace it, I have a WIFI signal

That is the short I saw when this problem happened for me, but there are other components that could cause this. If you have experience with micro-soldering you can try an few more things to at least diagnose this issue.

Use this trick to find where the short is coming from. I suggest using a microscope if possible as the failed component could be extremely small:

Then use this schematic to figure out what to replace the failed component with:
