Why does my back facing camera emit noise while in use?

Hello dear iFixit helpers.

A few weeks ago, I have started to recognize a problem with my back facing camera.

No matter if I am using a 3rd party App like Snapchat or Android’s camera, if my main camera is in use, there is a noticeable sound coming from the camera and also the picture is very blurry.

It seems to have to do with the hardware, since the sound does emit from the camera and not the speaker.

I’d describe the sound as that of a mosquito, it is equally loud too.

Since I have read somewhere that it might have to do with liquid wich interferes with the harware and because of the fact that I have had minor issues with water in the past (a few drops of water getting into the speaker f.e. but nothing serious like having dropped it in a bathtub or else) it might be just that.

I would love to have clearance on what to do right now or what to expect if I don’t takkle the problem because I will be in Australia for half a year in less than a month and have to know if I can rely on my smartphone to work.

First I would read this (or similar articles covering electronics and liquids);

Electronics Water Damage

After reading that article (or similar) I would open up the phone for a visual inspection of the interior to see if any of the conditions mentioned in the above article (or similar) apply to the condition of your unit. If such conditions are present then it would be wise to implement a course of action that is recommended in the article (or similar) mentioned above. :-)

To me it sounds like the autofocus trying to get a focus at its maximum speed. I’ve had the exact same thing on an iPhone X, where the noise indeed resembled a mosquito, rapid buzzing noise.

In the end it turned out to be a software issue for me, and nothing short of a full clean install of the phone fixed it. Not sure if it’s the same in your case, but it’s definitely worth a shot before starting to open things up.

First of all, thanks for your quick answer =)

I think it might be what you are describing.

Once I manage to get my camera to correctly focus, the noise disappears and once I move my phone so that it loses focus, the buzzing reappears.

So what you are suggesting is to reset the firmware on my phone / to reset it to factory settings?

Hi noah, to rule out a software issue, a clean install is the surest way to go indeed. Reset to factory default might nog be enough, but i’m unsure there, not really an Android expert ;) On an iPhone I would restore the phone in DFU mode from iTunes, which gives it a really clean setup. Reflashing the firmware is similar on android phones, but require a different approach depending on the actual model. A quick google might help there. Be aware this will cause you to lose all data on the phone, so be sure to backup everything you want to keep
