Why is the gray button on the right not being held down by the protruding stick on the lid, preventing the machine from draining and spinning. It works if I manually hold the button down.

Probably a misalignment or worn parts. You may be exerting more pressure and so the switch makes better contact internally. Pop the washer's top and check to see if there is any adjustment on the switch or if the mounting screws need tightening etc. Also check the "protruding stick" for wear and tear. Replacement of said parts maybe required too.

What is your make and model number examine the stick and see if it looks like the top has been broken off.
