Frequent Kernel Panic

Every time I boot my machine up, the typical kernel panic screen appears saying I must 'restart'.

Things I've tried to solve the issue:

-fiddled with the RAM, used another set

-reset PRAM

-booting in safe mode

-fiddled with airport extreme

-inserting disk to reformat

All to no avail. If I try to reformat, it just goes to the kernel panic when I hold C.

When it first occured, my screen started flickering violently, whilst the cursor was really sensitive, and it froze.

What other things can I try? (I have no warrenty)

Looks like you've done a pretty comprehensive job of troubleshooting this. I would try resetting the PMU. You might also want to connect to another Mac via firewire and boot to that machine's hard drive using target mode, as a means of 100% ruling out your hard drive. If it works fine running on a remote hard drive, then yours is the problem, and if it still gets the errors, then you know your hard drive is good.

I would leave one RAM slot empty, and then the other, in order to troubleshoot the possibility of a bad RAM slot. I would also remove the battery and Airport while doing all this, just to simplify the situation and rule out all extraneous elements.

Anyway, it does sound like the board, but testing the memory slots is worth a try if you haven't already.

Good answer but he will not be able to reach firewire target mode if he can't hold C to reformat before the kernal panic kicks in.

I don't think that's the case. Target mode kicks in immediately and does not trigger the normal boot sequence, whereas holding C powers on the computer normally and simply directs the computer to boot from optical if it can. Therefore it's possible that kernel panic would ensue while the computer is in the normal boot sequence trying to find a CD, whereas with target mode the laptop takes a separate path entirely, and possibly with a different result.

I had the same issue. I was not able to boot by holding down C at startup but starting up from another machines hard drive via firewire does work.

can you hold "option" upon the chime, and then insert the disk, and boot of the disk then?

Moments after posting this, it managed to boot up successfully (eventually) in safe mode. So I tried it normally and it worked.

I'm not sure what solved the issue though. Possibly just fiddling with the innards and making sure everything is tightly secure I guess. I've had no trouble since... but would you recommend a reformat in case it happens again? It's due a big clean up anyway in all fairness.

Holding option brought up the menu for booting, but it kept trying to start up normally even when I clicked the disk.

I really, really appreciate the help and advice. Thanks a lot. :)

Although it's likely a logic board problem, yes, I'd recommend wiping the drive and re-installing the OS, just to rule out software as the problem. Using target mode to boot from another machine's hard drive is the other way to do that, without having to erase your data, etc.

...it's just crashed after an hour of use. Did the same thing as before, flickering screen, extra sensitive cursor. I restarted and now the kernel panic keeps appearing again. *sigh* :(

Would love an answer to this, Seems I have the same problem...

Can't boot to CD - Just sends me to Kernel Panic screen.

Done a Hardware Diagnosis - Everything seems fine.

Can get to root via *cmd-s* and have done a fcsk, and it said everything was fine.

I have bootcamp setup, and I can get to my XP OS just fine, although the graphics is very shoddy, and just looks odd.

This makes me think it's a Graphics Card problem, but it works. Not well, but it works. Would the graphics card cause some sort of fault so that I can't load up the OSX?

Not sure how the problem came about. Was using the computer fine earlier in the afternoon, and when I came back later that night it had frozen with some graphics glitches. When I restarted, it kp'd me, so i shut it down and let it cool off. When i turned it on, it loaded the os Fine, but died after maybe 10 minutes.

Since then, doesn't matter how long it's off for it KP's me

To me, if feels like a hardware fault and more specifically the graphics card. I just don't understand how it can work, and not work at the same time.

Its your HD with bad sectors. system becomes unstable and panics when it cant read/save from/on bad sectors.

I'm having the same problem with my macbook pro 15.4 unibody 2.66, normally my graphic card is envidia Gforce330 but at the moment its not showing it its saing this that my graphic card is intel hd 288mb. before this i have change my ram apple told me to .. and the problem ll be fixt. spend 60 uk pounds change it . but noting happen still given me black screen wen i press a boron its starting and showing me some letters on chines on a silver screen and den its starting .. from the same place and with the same application i have been open. and then its showing me Kernal Panic CPU. is there anyone that

can help me.

Have you tried to replace the hard drive cable yet? I had a similar issue and replacing the cable fixed it. Just some FYI..Good Luck!

Pay attention if most of the time you have kernel panics something happens that generate vibrations and they can affect your mac. There is a motion sensor within the macs to prevent further damage to the hard disk, in case of fall ... but sometimes becomes overly sensitive and to notice any small vibration acts and can generate kernel panics. I think this was my case, the truth was already desperate ...
