Keyboard not Working (Power Button, SMC Reset and Trackpad Work)

I have mid-2015 Macbook Pro Retina that is mostly non-responsive to keyboard input. The power button works fine and an SMC reset can be performed, but other than that there is no response to keyboard input.

What has been tried so far:

  • Tested with USB keyboard, it works
  • Reset SMC and PRAM, no change
  • Tested with new internal keyboard, does not work
  • Tested with new trackpad cable, no change
  • Booted to recovery mode, safe mode, ,single user mode and a test drive via USB, does not work in any
  • Passes Apple diagnostics test without error

At this point I am pretty sure it s the logic board, but want to get some additional opinions. From what I have read, I understand the keyboard and trackpad somehow interact with each other despite having separate connectors on the logic board. However everything I have read indicates that if it were a problem tied to the trackpad then the trackpad should also be non-functional, but it isn’t. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Forgot this was still hanging out there. In the end a replacement trackpad and cable fixed it.

my track pad works but not keyboard even tho it lights up

I replaced the battery in my machine and now both trackpad and keyboard are unresponsive. I bought a brand new flex cable for it, it was CAREFULLY installed but the outcome was the same. I'll try to mount a new trackpad and hopefully, this will sort all the problems.

Stay tuned.

I would suggest running Apple Diagnostics.

  • Shut down the MacBook
  • Disconnect everything except the charger
  • Hold down the ‘D’ key, and boot the MacBook
  • Keep holding the ‘D’ key until you are asked to select your language
  • Once you select a language, Apple Diagnostics will run a bunch of tests

If there is something wrong, you should get a reference code which may help you track down the issue.

This could also potentially be a software issue, so if possible try a wipe and clean install. If your logic board is dead, you don’t have too much to lose.

Forgot to mention the Apple diagnostics come back clean.

Definitely not a software issue as the keyboard is not responding to the control key to select a boot device before any OS is loaded and also will not do PRAM reset. I also booted to an external drive with Yoemite on it via USB that I use for testing and experienced the same issue.

Using your external keyboard go into the Keyboard system preferences and click on the Input tab remove the keyboard resource close the control panel and then reopen it and add it back in to refresh the resource using the plus key. Restart your system did that fix it?

When I go to the Input Sources tab, it appears to only be a list of language options. US is the only one in the list and I cannot delete it. This system is running Mojave.

Add the British keyboard and then delete the US

I physically disconnected the keyboard and trackpad and booted into the OS. Powered off, reconnected keyboard and trackpad and rebooted, no change.

Also, I have a hard drive with Yosemite on it that I use for testing and when booted from USB the keyboard doesn't work there either so I don't think it is an OS configuration issue.

You're fighting a software problem within the OS not a physical one. So all of your actions here won't fix that.

If you wipe the drive (Disk Utility) and reinstall the OS that would also fix this.

I added British layout and deleted US, still no joy.

Also the internal keyboard is not working before getting to the OS. Pressing command won't bring up the boot menu and cmd+alt+p+r doesn't initiate a PRAM reset (both work with USB keyboard). I don't know the details of the innards of these keyboards, but I am assuming the power button and SMC reset combo must be on a separate circuit from the USB keyboard controller.

I am having the same issue with my 2015 MacBook Pro. Keyboard replacement, powers on, can SMC reset, but no keys working in any OS
