Why is my CPU running between 70-80% at all times?

Block Image

I have a 2015 Macbook Air (A1466). Purchased in 2017 refurbished from MicroCenter.

The last time I used my computer was about 1 month ago and it worked fine. I went to use it recently and I ran into the following issues:

  • The CPU was running almost at capacity
  • The computer shut off every time it was unplugged, said it was at 2% battery despite being plugged in for several days

* I couldn’t run a system update or open apps like TimeMachine to backup

  • When the computer went to sleep, it wouldn’t wake up by using the track pad or tapping the power button- Had to hold down the button and it often rebooted or acted like it had to be reboot
  • It took forever for the reboot set up to complete (grey/white bar that loads before you have the option to log in as a user)
  • The mouse was sluggish as well as everything else. (ex. it took 40 mins for google.com to load, it took 15 mins+ for any apps to open like the console or the system monitor - as mentioned above, most apps wouldn’t work.

I have tried the following with no improvement:

  • Replaced the battery, air dusted inside of computer - new battery has not been able to be charged over 47%
  • Reset SMC (I really thought this was the problem!)
  • Checked hardrive space (only 40g used by system, 40g available, 40g used by me)
  • Installed Intego and scanned my computer for virus’s & cleaned up files (No virus’s or quarantined files)
  • Turned off all of my automatic start programs
  • Checked system logs for errors,
  • Tried (& Failed to update my iOS. Currently at Mojave 10.14.3)

The mouse is less sluggish but my “sleep” issues remain, my CPU is now at 72.46% System/ 14.72% User - kernel_task fluctuates between using 56%-350% CPU. I am at a loss as to how this can deteriorate so quickly, never dropped or spilled on my laptop. I haven’t even had to install any new drivers. Contemplating restoring my computer. Have checked the history of a refurbished apple device before - I can’t remember where but it was using the serial number.

Please help. What do I do next?

Put original battery back in device to test with Coconut Battery. Results in attached photo

You might try starting up in Safe Mode: https://blog.macsales.com/42126-safe-mod.... Not only does that only load the bare minimum of things, it also performs first aid tasks and diagnostics.

I'm assuming that the fan is clear of dust and that System Information is reporting Condition: Normal for the new battery.

You might try starting up in Safe Mode. Not only does that load the bare minimum of things to operate, it also performs first aid and diagnostics tasks. Might help you narrow things down.

I have attempted to boot up in both safe mode(shift) and apple diagnostics(d/option+d) and neither have been successful. I have to hold the power button down for maybe 60 seconds (it feels like eons) to get it to wake from sleep or boot up. Once the backlighting on the screen comes up I hold down either shift, D or CMD+D - system boots up as "normal" - am I doing something wrong?

Start up your Mac while holding down the Shift key... I don't think you need to wait for the backlighting. Keep the Shift key depressed until you see the login window or the desktop. If successful, it should say "Safe Boot" in the top right corner.

I’m suspecting your battery is not charging properly. Install this app CoconutBattery and post a snapshot of the main window. You’ll want to do two captures one with the MagSafe plugged in and a second when you are running on the battery. Give it a good 5 minutes before you capture it. Post both here for us to see Agregar imágenes a una pregunta existente

Put original battery back in device and was *finally* able to download and launch coconutBattery. Screen shot attached. Capacity .2% charging with 0 watts, battery status Good. Is this the port on the computer or the charge cord? Don't think I can run diagnostics with the cord unplugged, it will just die.

I would start off replacing the I/O Board MacBook Air 13" (Mid 2013-2017) I/O Board Hopefully that's fixes things otherwise you have a deeper main logic board issue which will either need it fixed or replaced as well.

Thank you, Dan.

Is the I/O something I can replace myself (not soldered, connected to temperamental, delicate boards, etc), or do you recommend taking it in?
