Wet iPhone stuck on apple logo

I dropped my iPhone in the toilet and it turned on. Now it’s stuck on the apple logo. How can I fix it, or do I need to take it to get fixed?

Step 1 is always to not power it on. This can cause further damage.

You really want to open it up or have someone do it for you,and disconnect the battery, then at least let it dry out regardless if you want to proceed.

Is there important, non backed up,data on there? If so,you should pop the screen off, disconnect the battery(or have someone locally do this),and let it air dry before it gets too much worse. Then you can send it out for repair.

If all you care about is the iPhone, then you can open it yourself,or have a repair shop help. The whole phone needs to be disassembled and cleaned. Ultrasonic cleaning is the use of microscopic air bubbles that can really clean up the corrosion crap. This can sometimes make it start up again. The logic board would have to be ultrasonic cleaned or at the very least, soaked in isopropyl alcohol.

Now,once component damage is done,it’s done. If there’s a short,it would have to be fixed. If an ic chip(it sits on solder balls that connect underneath) has corrosion under it,it likely is damaged, and needs to be replaced. The metal shields on the phone also should be removed to have the best chance of the clean getting it to work again…all of which would require microsoldering skills and equipment.

If if you feel comfortable enough, you can open the phone and take out the logic board Using ifixit’s guide or some your tube videos. You want to keep track of the screws. Mixing up screws can be very bad…a long screw in a short hole will dig into the board. You’ll then want to take a clean tooth brush and brush it off with alcohol(preferably 99 percent at least 91). Clean off any crap the best you can. Sfter this, and making sure all water is dried out in the phone, you can try it again. It may work. It may not. And once water damaged,it’s very possible to be unreliable in the future.

If the cleaning doesnt work, sending it out for repair would be the next best option.

Let me know if you have further questions, and if you have important data on there that can’t be replaced. There are shops that specialize in data recovery. You want to be extra picky about shops in that case.

Fyi,don’t put the phone in rice. It’s a myth and will do nothing. It really doesn’t do anything. The only reason some people think it does is because they leave the phone for days and it happens to dry just enough to work again(or just by chance). The best thing is to at least pop the screen, disconnect the battery, and let the air dry…
