MacBook running only on AC power

So a few days back, my MacBook shut down randomly and wouldn’t turn on. I took it to an Apple store and they said its a logic board issue. I then took it to a 3rd party for the logic board repair. Now my MacBook boots up fine, but it runs only on AC power.

I’ve tried SMC reset, but no progress. The battery is detected and I’m pretty sure that my battery hasn’t been swapped during the repair judging by the cycle counts before and after the repair.

MagSafe shows the green LED and the battery is indeed charged to its full capacity. However, when I disconnect the wall adapter, it switches off. When starting it again, the date and time gets reset.

The menubar shows 100% and reads: Battery is charged Power Source : Power Adapter

Also, yesterday it showed 100% with green light even though the current charge was somewhere around 5600 mAh and was charging with low wattage (~0.5 W).

Just in case, the issue with the logic board was probably due to a power surge and a particular component that protects the processor from power fluctuations, I’m not sure which one, got damaged.

Alpha72 - Sounds like they failed to fix the charging logic within your logic board. There is a MOSFET unit that often burns out from power surges Q7100 (POWERPAK-6X3.7)

I would bring it back so they can fix this

Update (07/27/2019)

OK here’s the schematic for that board layout Here its a different supplier for the same component Q7180 IRF9395TRPBF DIRECTFET-MC

As you can see its the same design! The labels are a bit different as well.

Thanks for the answer. I'll try taking it back, but for the time being, will I be able to run heavy programs when connected to AC? Like say Photoshop? Cause I read somewhere that if the application draws more power than supplied by AC, it uses the battery.

True your battery can be leveraged to back fill the power needs when the MagSafe power is not able to support the load.

With that said if you are running heavy programs for long periods of time you really need a desktop system which has a deeper power supply and likewise has a much more powerful CPU/GPU options.

Thanks for the reply!

Hi there. I took my system back to them. However, they couldn't find any such component. My board number is 820-00165-A. They however did replace a particular component, don't know which one though, and now my laptop does run without a battery only for some time before it shuts down randomly. And post shut down, it refuses to boot up unless connected to the power adapter. Any ideas?
